Director - Payroll Operations

Job Description: The Accounting Director – Payroll Operations is responsible for payroll operations, including ensuring the completeness and accuracy of payroll and ensuring that all necessary reconciliations are completed in a timely manner. This leader oversees the processing of tax filings and required payments. This position is responsible for cross functional coordination with other key stakeholders and ensuring that benefits and system changes flow through to the payroll systems. Candidates outside of Utah may be considered, but we are are not currently hiring remote workers in the following states: CA, CT, HI, IL, NY, RI, VT, and WA. Business travel will be necessary, regardless of state of residence, and will primarily be within Intermountain Health's service area (UT, ID, NV, CO, WY, MT), but may also require travel within the United States. Essential Functions Directs the day-to-day operations of the payroll department. Directs management team in managing staffing levels and productivity. Directs and coordinates bi-weekly and calendar year-end processing of payroll including supplemental payrolls, W-2s, tax forms, and all additional required documentation per local and federal regulations. Ensures payroll and tax filings are processed accurately and timely. Partners with Human Resources (HR) to resolve HR and benefit issues related to payroll processing. Assists the Senior Payroll Director to resolve issues related to the accuracy of payroll and compliance with federal and state regulations. Ensures effective working relationships within the department and with other departments. Leads and participates in cross functional working groups throughout the organization. Directs human resource functions, including orientation, education/training, feedback, performance evaluation, and policy and procedure development. Collaborates with HR concerning employee issues and performance. Conducts employee coaching, counselling, disciplinary actions and annual appraisals. Ensures staff adherence to departmental policies and procedures. Assists to establish policies and procedures related to the payroll department. Partners with the Senior Payroll Director to ensure that payroll processes include strong internal controls to safeguard the assets of Intermountain Health. Ensures that controls are applied and followed in accordance with internal Financial Reporting Controls. Serves as an in-house technical expert relating to all payroll matters and compliance matters. Maintains current knowledge on regulatory changes impacting the payroll area, including industry-specific regulations for healthcare and not-for-profit entities. Leads the payroll team and provides coaching and training to the payroll managers. Skills Payroll Payroll processing Human resources Payroll management Communication Payroll operations Payroll systems Strategic planning Qualifications Required Bachelor’s degree in accounting, human resources, or a related field is required. Degree must be obtained through an accredited institution. Education will be verified. Professional payroll or related human resources certification. Demonstrated experience handling multi-state and high-volume payroll processing, including both exempt and non-exempt workforces is required. Demonstrated experience leading a successful team. Experience with tax filings for federal, state, and local agencies. Preferred Master’s degree in accounting, human resources, or a related field from an accredited institution. Education is verified. CPP certification. Five (5) years of experience managing payroll in a large, complex organization. Experience with Workday, UKG and Intermountain Health’s PhysComp system. Experience with nonprofit healthcare payroll. Physical Requirements Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, documents, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs. Frequent interactions with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, needs, and issues quickly and accurately. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use for typing, accessing needed information, etc. For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles. With this position, you are eligible to participate in the Annual Pay for Performance (AP4P) Plan. This plan enables Intermountain Health to provide leaders with an additional performance compensation opportunity. The AP4P award opportunities are calculated as a percentage of your base salary.
