About the position The Metadata Supervisor is a full-time (40 hours per week), onsite position, reporting to the Senior Manager, Library Operations and Collections Management and supervising the Cataloging Specialist, Foreign Languages and the Cataloging Specialist, Digital Collection, Serials and Multimedia (shared report). The Metadata Supervisor provides leadership in advancing user-centered, future-facing metadata practices, manages cataloging and metadata standards and services. This individual has primary responsibility for bibliographic access to the Library's collections as well as serving subject specialist and non-specialist communities. The position duties also include original and complex copy cataloging for materials in multiple languages and multiple formats, including print, video, special collections, rare books, and ephemera. The Metadata Supervisor works closely with other Library departments, including Acquisitions, Reference and Access Services, and Archives and Manuscripts, to ensure cataloging and metadata standards and needs are met. Collaboration with the Archives and Manuscripts team is required to create, maintain, and enhance subject and name authority records in the ArchivesSpace platform. Other main duties are to identify, plan, and implement database clean-up projects, ensuring database integrity, as well as to collect and report statistics for the unit, set cataloging priorities and workflows. Responsibilities • Manages cataloging and metadata activities to enhance discovery of and access to the collections; create records in a wide range of formats and languages according to best practices and standards. • Produces original and complex, adaptive copy cataloging for Library materials in a wide range of formats and languages to facilitate access and discovery. • Develops and implements cataloging processes and procedures to meet the needs of both specialist and non-specialist users. • Collaborates with the Special Collections and Archives team to create, maintain, and enhance subject and name authority records in the ArchivesSpace platform. • Contributes to the initiatives to review, enhance, and/or remediate descriptive information. • Reviews and revises, as appropriate, all cataloging and related processes and procedures to conform to current professional standards and support specialized research needs. • Ensures adherence to proper professional standards in growth and maintenance of bibliographic files. • Works to enact inclusive metadata practices. • Maintains authority files by updating existing records and submitting changes to OCLC, and creating original records as needed. • Submits original subject headings to SACO for approval and addition to the OCLC authority file. • Performs and advises on data migration, harvesting, and syncing projects for discovery services. • Provides expertise regarding innovations and trends relating to the discovery and access of library materials and proactively works in partnership with departmental staff to improve access and workflow efficiencies. • Directs batch loading and deleting activities, global editing of local bibliographic and metadata records, and maintenance and creation of record load profiles and cataloging templates. • Provides guidance, cataloging support and training to Library staff for all formats of material. • Acts as the systems administrator for the resource management area of the Library's collection management database. • Works with the Digitization Team to normalize and share metadata between internal systems and disseminate metadata to external systems. • Provides technical guidance with data querying and automation of processes for Library staff. • Assists with collection analysis. • Queries data and gathers statistics for analysis, reporting, surveys, and evidence-based decision making. • Facilitates analytic reporting from various systems and uses a variety of software tools for the extraction, manipulation, and visualization of data for use by various systems. • Automates manual processes using schedulers, macros, and/or APIs. • Demonstrates a deep commitment to user-centered design of search and discovery interfaces. • Actively and intentionally supports CMOG's commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion. • Actively supports the Museum's Advancement initiatives. • Serves as a member of the Library's collections and discovery services team. • Assists with team projects as needed. • Hires, trains and supervises staff. • Supports the development and effectiveness of team members through mentoring and coaching; provides growth opportunities as practical. • Demonstrates inclusive leadership; ensures effective staff relations based on trust, respect, and teamwork. • Encourages open communication with and among staff and conducts themselves in a manner which supports this practice. • Leads by example; conducts themselves in an ethical, positive, and professional manner at all times. • Accountable for supervisory responsibilities outlined in all institutional policies, procedures and guidelines.
