Job Summary As a Special Education Assistant, you will provide technical and advanced assistance to our specialists and professionals in delivering educational plans tailored to the unique needs of our students. Your primary focus will be on supporting students with Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs), assisting with lesson plans, and maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment. Key Responsibilities Assist specialists and professionals in delivering educational plans and meeting IEP goals and objectives Support teachers in implementing lesson plans, grading assignments, and maintaining accurate records Provide individualized assistance to students with lesson assignments, reinforcing learning concepts and promoting academic success Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom, including audio-visual equipment and office machines Assist with supervising students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, lunch, and field trips Provide special medical support to students as needed, ensuring their safety and well-being Maintain confidentiality of student records and files, adhering to strict guidelines and protocols Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, students, and families Essential Qualifications To excel in this role, you will need: A High School Diploma or equivalency A Level III Educational Assistant license from the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) A valid driver's license A valid First Aid Certificate A Food Handlers Permit (if required) Some related experience, including public contact, is desirable Preferred Qualifications While not mandatory, the following qualifications will be considered a plus: Experience working with students with diverse needs and abilities Knowledge of classroom management techniques and strategies Familiarity with cultural diversities and traditional Native American beliefs and practices Ability to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and families Skills and Competencies To succeed in this role, you will need to possess: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work effectively with students, colleagues, and families from diverse backgrounds Strong organizational and record-keeping skills Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information Physical stamina to sit, stand, and lift as required Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic educational environment Career Growth Opportunities At Gallup McKinley County Schools, we are committed to supporting the professional growth and development of our staff.
