We're seeking a dedicated and passionate Afterschool Teacher/Tutor to join our team at the Simi Valley Family YMCA. Key Responsibilities Plan, organize, and implement engaging, age-appropriate, and developmentally suitable program activities that cater to the diverse needs of our youth participants. Nurture children through purposeful programming, focusing on building achievement and belonging in youth, as well as fostering positive relationships among youth and within families. Supervise children, classrooms, or sites, and all activities, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment, including ADA accommodations where necessary. Make ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child to understand their needs and tailor your approach accordingly. Cultivate positive relationships with parents and maintain effective communication to keep them informed about their child's progress and involved in our programs. Engage parents as volunteers and connect them to the YMCA community, promoting a sense of belonging and cooperation. Use positive reinforcement techniques to address children's behavioral concerns, promoting a supportive and respectful environment. Attend scheduled staff meetings, trainings, and complete all assigned online trainings to stay updated on best practices and YMCA policies. Participate in family nights and program activities, contributing to the overall success of our programs. Essential Qualifications To be considered for this role, you must meet the following essential qualifications: Meet educational and experience qualifications established by state law, including completion of at least six (6) postsecondary semester units of specified early childhood education classes or hold a valid Child Development Assistant permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Be at least 18 years of age. Possess knowledge of acceptable child care and day camp practices. Demonstrate initiative to plan, lead, and participate in activities. Hold current CPR & First Aid certifications through American Red Cross or American Heart Association (in-person format only). Have Preventative Health clearance through an EMSA recognized organization. Be up-to-date on TDAP and MMR vaccinations. Obtain Criminal records clearance (completed during the hiring process). Have Health Screening and TB clearance (completed during the hiring process). Preferred Qualifications While not mandatory, the following qualifications are highly desirable: Additional units or coursework in child development, education, or a related field. Experience working with diverse populations and ages. Familiarity with mandated reporting and the steps involved. Skills and Competencies To excel in this role, you'll need: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to plan, lead, and participate in a range of activities in various outdoor and indoor settings. Physical stamina to stand and/or sit for extended periods, wade in water, walk continuously for at least half a mile, and work outdoors in any weather condition. The capacity to lift up to 25 pounds.
