About the position

The Wholesale Risk Director is responsible for leading a team of Wholesale Risk Officers, encompassing the Bank's lending to all Corporate Banking, Business Banking and BPB Banking relationships of the bank. The Wholesale Risk Director is responsible for the oversight of the credit team, delivering an end-to-end suite of debt products to the Bank's wholesale client base. In addition, is responsible for the overall credit performance and risk adjusted return of the loan portfolio that is overseen. This position ensures the overall quality of the loan portfolio is maintained, decisioning new and increased loan commitments to the client base. The Wholesale Risk Director is a direct adjunct to the Line of Business directors, as this position handles the client's financial debt needs, ensuring that the overall client experience is favorable and that the Bank is in a position to expand its wholesale relationships. Additionally, takes the lead where debt product opportunities are identified and is accountable for all aspects of due diligence, underwriting, structuring and oversight of the preparation of the credit package for review and approval. The Wholesale Risk Director interfaces directly with the client and participates in building the client relationship.

Responsibilities
• Works closely in the recruitment and selection process, such as conducting and providing feedback from interviews, recruiting within the budget, identifying opportunities for cost savings and ensuring proper departmental specifics for on-boarding.

• Provides timely feedback to employees (check-ins, reports, annual evaluations, coaching, and disciplinary action).

• Development of high potential employees, identifying, providing growth opportunities with training, meeting inclusion, shadowing, etc., in conjunction with the Center for Professional and Organizational Development.

• Ensuring assignment and accomplishment of goals holding employees accountable, measuring results cross training, and eliciting innovation and process improvement.

• Maintaining employee motivation engagement & recognition.
,
• Inspiring employee commitment and integrity, modeling cultural values and positive behaviors.
,
• Managing over-time control in a timely manner, within the requirements of FLSA standards.
,
• Ensuring regulatory excellence in all aspects of employee responsibilities by monitoring regulatory expectation specific to each report and holding employees accountable to their specific regulatory responsibilities.

• Responsible for ensuring appropriate loan pipeline management and resource allocation to deal flow within and between the LOBs.

• Is the primary resource to the LOB Relationship Managers for loan opportunity discussions, prescreen meetings and loan structuring.

• Responsible for all aspects of loan approval process including coordination with line of business management and other product partners.

• Develops action plans for addressing client issues and credit requests, oversees the pool of Risk Officers who are responsible for the credit request reports, approves loans up to Board-delegated credit authority level, and implements the approved requests.

• Has client contact to lead the loan sales process including all aspects of loan negotiation.

• Effective communication internally and externally; will be expected to lead joint sales calls with LOB partners and relationship managers.

• Demonstrates broad knowledge of the client's industry; is aware of benchmarks, standards, methodologies and structures; has up to date knowledge of client industry practices and processes; keeps abreast of trends and development.

• Assesses risk tolerances within the loan portfolio, approve loan level risk ratings, and oversees the analysis of relevant credit opportunities.

• Responsible for ensuring risk management and portfolio processes are executed consistently, efficiently and effectively.
,
• Responsible for ensuring appropriate governance is in place to adequately monitor the portfolio.
,
• Works with internal and external legal counsel to assess pertinent legal issues within each individual loan request.
,
• Assesses any increasing risk issues within the portfolio, and delegates to appropriate internal partners if risk tolerances are breached.
,
• Held accountable for asset quality by monitoring loan portfolio performance reports including collateral and customer concentrations, industry exposures, policy exceptions and criticized loans.

• Prepares quarterly reports, including concrete action plans for prompt and effective credit resolution.
,
• Understands the importance of leading in a matrix environment that combines both product management and line of business accountability.

• Utilizes resources and tools to coach the client management process behaviors of the team and instill the discipline of this process throughout the geographic footprint of the bank.

• Responsible for managing the talent, goal setting and compensation for associates within the department.

Requirements
• More than 10 years credit experience with credit approval responsibilities.
,
• Previous experience as a relationship manager preferred.
,
• Exposure to multiple business lines with experience at handling more complex transactions required.
,
• Good interpersonal skills are required to deal with banking professionals with various skill sets, risk management staff, clients and auditors.
,
• Credit training and private banking experience (lending or credit) is beneficial.
,
• Product development within the field is useful.
,
• Excellent communication skills, written and oral.
,
• Must be proficient with infrastructure for centralized consumer/small business underwriting, underwriting practices, documentation and servicing issues.
,
• Good leadership abilities and strong negotiating skills are required.
,
• Possesses strong organizational and project management skills.
,
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Excel and PowerPoint.
