Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and forward-thinking Consultant Hepatologist to join a well-established Gastroenterology & Hepatology team in Truro. This role offers the opportunity to work within a modern, award-winning department and contribute meaningfully to patient care across liver disease and general gastroenterology services.
Core Responsibilities
As a Consultant Hepatologist, you will:

Deliver high-quality clinical care in hepatology and gastroenterology, adhering to NHS standards and clinical best practice.
Contribute to the strategic development of specialist hepatology services within the trust.
Share leadership for daily service delivery and multidisciplinary activity.
Teach and support trainees, students, and allied health professionals.
Participate in regular clinical governance, audit, and continuing professional development (CPD) activities.
Attend relevant departmental and hospital meetings as defined in your job plan.

Qualifications & Registration
To be considered for this role you must have:

Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise. See the GMC’s Specialist Register guidance on eligibility and requirements.
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or within six months of achieving your Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT)) in Hepatology or Gastroenterology.
MRCP (Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians) or equivalent.
Demonstrable experience managing complex hepatology and gastroenterology cases, including therapeutic and diagnostic colonoscopy.

Desirable Assets
These additional qualifications would strengthen your application:





A higher academic degree (e.g., MD, PhD).
Formal training in “Train the Trainer” or management principles.
Proven record of clinical leadership, quality improvement, or service redesign.

Professional Experience
We’re looking for candidates who have:

Experience in educational roles and supervision of medical trainees.
Involvement in clinical audit, research, or governance programmes.
Solid grounding in multi-disciplinary team (MDT) working.
Relevant diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy experience.

Skills & Abilities
Successful candidates will demonstrate:

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Excellent clinical judgement and problem-solving capability.
Effective teamwork and leadership within complex healthcare environments.
Competency with clinical IT systems and data documentation.

Additional Requirements
Applicants must also:

Be cleared by Occupational Health.
Have a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
Provide three professional references.
Have access to reliable transport and be able to travel for clinical duties within and occasionally outside the county.
Reside within an acceptable response time for on-call Category A duties (typically within 30 minutes).

This position can offer sponsorship for eligible candidates requiring a UK work visa. Guidance on working and applying for health and social care roles from abroad is provided by the UK government.
For international clinicians, joining the Specialist Register and understanding the UK recruitment process is essential.
