Position Summary

The Conservation Coordinator South-Central Alberta is responsible for assisting in the delivery of conservation programs in Alberta’s grasslands, specifically related to the Conservation Easement Program, in accordance with NCC’s policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. The Conservation Coordinator will report to the Regional Conservation Operations Manager and will work closely with the Natural Area Manager South-Central Alberta, other conservation staff, and the rest of the regional team in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. Externally, the Conservation Coordinator will work with local landowners, partner organizations, conservation volunteers, funders, and other members of the public.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Compliance Monitoring
• Complete standardized reporting for Conservation Easement projects
• Complete aerial imagery comparisons between multiple years for projects
• Complete field visits to ground truth observations from aerial imagery
• Complete comprehensive documentation of findings from aerial/ground monitoring
• Support field monitoring on NCC owned lands (species observations, anthropogenic features mapping, weed mapping)
• Update internal databases
• Complete Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) within databases
• Follow NCC Alberta Health and Safety guidance and processes

Team Collaboration
• Support external land partners through grant application support and community outreach
• Participate in and support the Conservation Volunteers program when events occur within South Central Alberta
• Support equipment logistics and organization
• Support staff outside of South-Central Alberta with field work, compliance monitoring, data entry, or QAQC (as needed)

Position Requirements
• Successful completion of a university degree in landscape ecology, conservation biology, natural resource management, or related field;
• Ideal candidates are located or willing to relocate to Lethbridge/Fort Macleod/Pincher Creek area;
• An understanding of conservation easement and other legal tools associated with private land conservation;
• Ability to communicate positively and effectively with landowners, leaseholders, donors, and other stakeholders;
• Knowledge and understanding of the rural/ranching culture;
• The ability to build and support effective partnerships both within and outside NCC to achieve the organization’s goals;
• Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously, including excellent problem solving, planning and organizational skills, and attention to details and timelines;
• Comfortable working in a team setting and capable of easily communicating with a wide range of people from the public and private sectors;
• Flexibility, reliability, self-motivation, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
• Ability to manage highly confidential material; and
• Committed to the mission and values of NCC.

Position Assets
• A working knowledge of Alberta’s landscapes, flora, fauna, communities, and conservation issues;
• Previous experience in grassland and range management;
• Knowledge of Alberta’s species at risk;
• Experience with iPad technology associated with ArcGIS field-based mapping, as well as proficiency with MS Office Suite;
• Demonstrated ability to mentor junior staff and manage volunteers;
• Conflict resolution skills;
• Willingness and ability to travel and be available for consultation; and
• Experience operating an all-terrain vehicle and hauling a trailer.
