Chemical / Process Engineer Needed: Aspen or DWSIM + Techno-Economic Analysis (Biogas / Biomethane)

About the Project:
ClathraEnergies is conducting a techno-economic feasibility study to evaluate flexible storage and transport solutions for biogas/biomethane from decentralized agricultural and territorial sites. The project targets a key barrier to biomethane deployment: limited or congested gas grid injection capacity, whether temporary (peak-shaving) or structural (seasonal/geographical). Many existing biogas plants are also affected by declining cogeneration revenues, while switching to direct biomethane injection often requires costly upgrading and grid connection, with long development timelines.
The study assesses options to decouple gas production from grid injection by enabling reversible on-site storage and transport to alternative injection points or centralized hubs. Configurations are compared based on technical feasibility, energy use, and economic performance, with a focus on modular solutions that are easy to integrate on-site and economically accessible for small and medium farm-scale operators.

Profile:
1.Educational Background
• Chemical Engineering

2. Technical Skills
Core Engineering Knowledge:
• Mass and energy balances
• Applied thermodynamics
• Natural gas systems
• Experience with biomethane and biogas systems is considered a plus
Modeling Tools:
• Advanced Microsoft Excel (structured calculation sheets, scenario analysis, sensitivity studies) skills are mandatory
• Experience with (Aspen or DWSIM) is a must.
• Basic programming skills (Python or MATLAB) for parametric studies is preferred
Techno-Economic Analysis:
The candidate must be capable of structuring and conducting a conceptual techno-economic assessment and life cycle assessment (LCA) of gas storage and transport systems. This includes:
• Estimation of CAPEX (Equipment, Integration, Installation,..etc)
• Estimation of OPEX (Energy consumption, Logistics and transport costs, Operation and maintenance,…etc)
• Calculation of normalized cost indicators (€/Nm³ of biomethane, €/MWh of required energy,…etc)
• Comparison of alternative technical configurations
The candidate must be able to clearly justify assumptions and explain how technical design decisions impact economic performance.

• Comfort working with incomplete data and justified assumptions
• Clear communication skills

1. Process Simulation & Modeling
• Development of simulation models for both On-site storage and Transport configurations
• Implementation of mass and energy balances within the simulation environment
• Definition and documentation of operating assumptions and boundary conditions

• Life cycle assessment (LCA), assessing the impacts associated with all the stages of the life cycle of the process
