Student Data Scientist Trainee
Department Overview:
The Wisconsin Reading Center (WRC) is a core retinal image reading lab within the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS). The WRC was founded on the enduring principles of intellectual honesty, quality, relevance, innovation, and staff satisfaction. Incepted in 1970 to support the seminal NIH-funded trials of laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy (DR), the WRC has broadened its scope to the evaluation of many retinal diseases, including dry AMD, atrophic AMD, neovascular AMD, DME, retinal vein occlusion, posterior uveitis, inherited retinal disease, AIDS-related ocular disease, and cataract.

Qualifications:
-Currently enrolled undergraduate or masterās student at the University of Wisconsin with a focus in data science, business analytics, statistics, computer science, or a related field-Minimum 2.0 grade point average
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-Basic knowledge of data analysis, data cleaning, and data visualization principles-Ability to collect, organize, and analyze data to identify trends and insights-Experience or coursework using data analysis or visualization tools (e.g., Excel, Python, R, SQL, Tableau, Power BI)-Strong analytical, problemāsolving, and attentionātoādetail skills-Ability to create clear reports and visualizations for technical and nonātechnical audiences-Effective written and verbal communication skills-Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a researchāoriented environment-Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
Position Summary/Job Duties:
-Assists in collecting, organizing, and cleaning data from various sources to ensure accuracy and integrity for analysis-Conduct exploratory or set data analysis to identify trends, patterns, forecasts, and/or insights that can inform strategic decisions and improve business processes-Create clear and visually appealing data visualizations, dashboards, and reports to communicate findings to the WRC team members and stakeholders-Support WRC team members in research and other projects by providing data-related assistance such as data retrieval and statistical analysis-Proactively identify opportunities to enhance data analysis processes, data visualization techniques, and data reporting mechanisms
Physical Demands:
This position is primarily sedentary and performed in a remote setting. The individual must be able to:-Sit for extended periods of time while working at a computer.-Use a computer, keyboard, mouse, and other standard office equipment for prolonged durations.-Maintain visual focus on a computer screen for extended periods.-Perform repetitive hand and finger movements for typing and data entry.-Occasionally stand, stretch, or change positions as needed.-Communicate verbally and in writing via virtual platforms.-Lift and move light objects (up to 10 lbs) occasionally, such as a laptop or peripheral equipment.
