Senior Accountant / Accountant (Regulatory & Financial Reporting) Position Summary This role performs complex professional accounting work related to the recording, analysis, and reporting of financial transactions. The position is responsible for preparing financial statements, regulatory filings, and analytical reports while ensuring accurate general ledger reconciliation and compliance with GAAP and statutory accounting requirements. The role also supports audits, budgeting activities, and the development of accounting processes and staff. Key Responsibilities Financial Reporting & Analysis • Perform complex accounting activities related to the recording and reporting of financial transactions. • Prepare financial statements, internal reports, and work papers for accounting and audit purposes. • Research and analyze variances between current financial results, prior periods, and budgeted amounts. • Ensure timely, accurate posting, balancing, and reconciliation of general ledger accounts for multiple entities. Regulatory & Audit Support • Prepare quarterly and annual insurance department filings, including conversion from GAAP to statutory accounting. • Coordinate with independent auditors and insurance department auditors to ensure compliance with reporting requirements. • Support regulatory examinations and audit requests by providing documentation and analysis. Accounting Operations & Process Improvement • Recommend enhancements to accounting systems, policies, and procedures. • Assist business partners with budgeting activities, proper expenditure coding, documentation, and accounting guidance. • Review work completed by bookkeepers, bank reconciliation staff, and accounts payable clerks to ensure accuracy. Leadership & Training • Provide guidance, oversight, and review of technical and clerical accounting staff. • Assist in the training and development of accounting personnel. • Exercise discretion and independent judgment in the execution of job responsibilities. Qualifications & Experience Required • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent experience. • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience, including lead and/or training responsibilities. • 4+ years of experience applying accounting and auditing principles, including GAAP and statutory accounting. • Strong verbal and written communication skills. • Proficiency with spreadsheet applications (e.g., Microsoft Excel). • Clean credit history as verified by a credit report. • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently.
