Job Summary/Basic Function:The Science Communications Assistant is a 10-hour-a-week, remote/hybrid position that specializes in science storytelling and communications related to energy, water, and the environment. This role will report directly to the Research Communications Manager within the Boise State University Division of Research and Economic Development. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience for someone pursuing a career in science communications, marketing, or related fields.This position will also support the communications needs of Idaho's $24 million National Science Foundation EPSCoR RII project, Idaho Community-engaged Resilience for Energy-Water Systems (I-CREWS).In this role, the writer will:Collaborate with colleagues at Boise State and the University of IdahoCraft strategic social media posts for various channelsWrite short- and long-form articles communicating EPSCoR research to a lay audienceThe selected candidate can expect to gain professional experience in:Creating strategic communication plans with supportCommunicating science and research in an accessible, lay-friendly styleWorking with professional science communicators and marketersBuilding working relationships across multiple universitiesDepartment Overview:The Division of Research and Economic Development provides comprehensive support for faculty during all phases of research endeavors, manages the university’s intellectual property portfolio, facilitates relationships with industry for research and commercialization collaboration, and leads outreach aimed at fostering economic development in Boise and the region. We are seeking a part-time science communications assistant to write and create NSF EPSCOR research-related content at Boise State University.Level Scope:Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training. Typically hold a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant professional experience.Essential Functions:95% of the time, the Science Communications Assistant will:Collaborate with Idaho EPSCoR institutions and serve as the main point of contact for that relationship and our PIs.Be the primary contact for all EPSCoR-related communications stories.Manage the Boise State EPSCoR narrative in campus and non-campus media.Create and maintain a database of all EPSCoR-funded projects, PIs, and students at Boise State.Create content for EPSCoR and water/energy/environment-related research, full-length features (research updates, student and faculty profiles, collaboration stories, new and emerging partnerships, award announcements, etc.), social media posts and channels (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin), end-of-year compilation newsletter.Develop and maintain a content calendar for all of the aforementioned content.5% of the time, the Science Communications Assistant will:Other duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:Ability to work 10-12 hours/week.Professionalism.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.An interest in science communications and storytelling.Ability to work independently and remotely with limited supervision.Strong organizational and time management skills.Ability to tailor content for a specific audience.Ability to take direction from a supervisor and relate to a variety of groups.Ability to collaborate and sustain working relationships with both Boise State entities and non-Boise State entities.Creativity and ability to work independently.Good knowledge of social media trends.Minimum Qualifications:Ability to write quickly, cleanly, format, edit and review stories and photos for the web and produce stories of different types.Excellent writing, editing and communication skills.Experience using word processing and basic web content management materials.Preferred Qualifications:Experience in creative writing or science communications.Demonstrated experience with social media and managing accounts.Salary and Benefits:Salary starting at $20.48 an hour and is commensurate with experience. This position is non-benefit eligible.
