[Remote] Story Editor, Chalkbeat and Votebeat
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Civic News Company is the parent company of nonprofit newsrooms focused on education, elections, and public health. They are seeking a Story Editor for Chalkbeat and Votebeat to edit stories, ensuring they are balanced and compelling, while providing editorial support and coaching to reporters.
Responsibilities
• Line editing stories from Civic News Company’s Votebeat and Chalkbeat
• Making sure stories incorporate regional or national context and are balanced, compelling, properly sourced
• Ensuring that stories are precise and clear, read smoothly, and adhere to AP and Civic News style
• Attending daily and weekly planning meetings
• Providing editorial support to bureau chiefs and managing editors
• Inputting and proofing stories in our CMS and occasionally helping with homepage curation and photo uploading
• Providing one-on-one coaching and mentoring for reporters when needed
Skills
• 5+ years experience in daily journalism
• Expertise in story structure, line editing, and copy editing
• Experience working in a CMS
• Stellar news judgment
• Strong interpersonal skills with a knack for working with early career and experienced reporters and collaborating with other editors
• A demonstrable interest in U.S. public education and voting rights
• Deep knowledge of U.S. public education and voting rights
• Journalism experience in New York, Denver, Indianapolis, Michigan, Memphis, Chicago, Newark, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wisconsin, or Texas
• Fluency in Spanish
