You'll be the system.As Principal Software Engineer, ePrescribing, you own the architecture, reliability, and evolution of Prescryptive's ePrescribing platform — the technical backbone that ensures prescriptions move accurately, securely, and at scale across a complex healthcare ecosystem.You're not a passenger in this domain. You're the authority. If you live and breathe NCPDP ePrescribing, thrive on the gnarly interoperability challenges that make most engineers tap out, and want your technical decisions to have real downstream impact on patients and providers — this is the role built for you.You'll operate with the autonomy of a principal IC and the influence of a domain owner: defining the problems worth solving, architecting the solutions, and setting the direction as standards, partners, and products evolve.Key AccountabilitiesDomain Ownership: Set technical direction and own system health for ePrescribing across the platformArchitecture & Scale: Design systems that support interoperability, multi-version standards, and growth across customers and partnersStandards Strategy: Lead adoption and evolution of NCPDP standards, including version transitions and long-term compatibilityProduction Leadership: Establish patterns for rapid diagnosis and resolution of issues in live environmentsCross-Functional Influence: Drive alignment across Engineering, Operations, Customer Care, and external partnersPrimary ResponsibilitiesDefine and evolve the architecture for ePrescribing systems, ensuring scalability, reliability, and interoperabilityLead implementation of NCPDP SCRIPT standards, including multi-version support and translation services (e.g., 2017 ↔ 2023)Design and optimize XML-based message processing, including schema strategy, transformation, and validationEstablish patterns and tooling for certification, validation, and onboarding of new partners and message typesOwn complex production issues end-to-end, setting the standard for real-time troubleshooting and resolutionPartner with Operations and Customer Care to improve system transparency and reduce issue resolution timeIntegrate with external networks (e.g., Surescripts, Change Healthcare) and ensure resilient partner connectivityIdentify and address systemic gaps, reducing single points of failure and improving long-term maintainabilityMentor engineers and elevate team capability in healthcare interoperability and system designRequired skills, abilities, and educationBachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or related fieldDeep, hands-on expertise in NCPDP ePrescribing (SCRIPT) standardsProven track record designing and operating distributed, message-driven systemsStrong command of XML and schema-driven integrationsExperience owning end-to-end ePrescribing workflows and interoperability across systemsBackground working with:EHR/EMR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner)Pharmacy Management Systems (PMS)Retail and/or long-term care pharmacy workflowsFamiliarity with ePrescribing networks/intermediaries (e.g., Surescripts, Change Healthcare)Demonstrated ability to operate in high-urgency, production-driven environmentsStrong communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholdersMust have permission to work in the U.S. on a permanent basisPreferred skills, abilities, and educationExperience designing multi-version interoperability and translation layersExposure to long-term care workflowsExperience in regulated healthcare environmentsTrack record of leading system evolution in scaling or early-stage environmentsWhat we have to offerThe opportunity to grow alongside an early-stage company shaking up a big, old-fashioned industryFlexible time off, including 12 paid holidays401k match plus 100% employer paid medical, dental, and vision premiumsCompany contribution to Health Savings AccountStock optionsPrescryptive is committed to fair pay practices. The projected annual salary for this position is $177,500 to $222,500.
