The Payroll Assistant (NY HELPS) position is a full-time role within the New York State Taxation & Finance agency, focused on processing payroll transactions and ensuring accuracy in personnel records. This position is part of the NY HELPS program, allowing for non-competitive appointments, and aims to support payroll operations while adhering to state guidelines and policies.
Responsibilities
Ā Review personnel transactions for accuracy and process them in the appropriate human resource and payroll systems in a timely manner.

Ā Independently compute less complex salary calculations, increment codes, and anniversary dates according to contract provisions and guidelines.

Ā Assist in researching inquiries from employees and administration staff.

Ā Follow up on various personnel transactions with appropriate parties, including administration staff and control agencies.

Ā Process wage and deduction information and related transactions in the appropriate systems, including data entry of special payments and direct deposits.

Ā Run and review PayServ queries and Control D Reports, taking appropriate action as needed.

Ā Monitor and respond to inquiries received in personal and shared email boxes.

Ā Update or change information in the human resource and payroll systems as necessary.

Ā Communicate effectively via telephone, email, fax, and written correspondence.

Ā Provide troubleshooting support for Payroll Online and handle verification of employment requests.
Requirements
Ā One year of payroll experience, including computing time worked, salaries, and deductions.
,
Ā Permanent service in this title or one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/c service in a title SG-4 or higher for competitive minimum qualifications.
Nice-to-haves
Ā Experience with HRIS/PayServ systems.

Ā Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
