GENERAL SUMMARY

Math Apprentice's manage a small cohort of approximately 16-24 high school students and promote academic success by focusing intently to provide individualized instruction and build strong relationships with students during their year of service. During a typical school day, Math Apprentice's will work with up to four students at a time, two of whom will work independently on a blended-learning platform, and facilitate lessons during six class periods per day. Math Apprentice's will implement Saga's proprietary curriculum to foster academic success and help students reach their goals. In addition to offering academic support, Math Apprentices also serve as student advocates and mentors and must build strong, meaningful relationships with their students. This position encompasses a 13-week program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Attend pre-service training prior to engaging with students
Provide daily or regularly scheduled math tutoring to your caseload of students assigned at the beginning of the 12 week cycle identified by DESE. This model is embedded into the regular school day for students, and you will serve between 4-8 students a class period. You will work in a 1:4 ratio of tutor to student during tutoring sessions
Use student data to differentiate math instruction for your students and adapt lesson plans as needed
Maintain regular ongoing communication with parents/guardians via email, text or phone, given parent/guardian preference
Prepare to navigate varying technology, both hardware and software, and troubleshoot technical issues as they arise
Maintain a proactive approach to work in order to complete deliverables on time and maintain proper work-life balance
Check and respond to emails daily and regularly consult with your main points of contact at the district and school
Participate in regular observation and feedback sessions with your main point of contact at the district and school for professional development and growth
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Associate's degree, or higher, in any discipline or 60 college credits for an accredited university


$18.00 per hour for those with 60 college credits or an Associates
$20.00 per hour for those with a Bachelor's degree or higher
Required to be U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents
Prior experience coaching, tutoring, or mentoring students, preferred but not required
Please be aware that you must clear a National Service Criminal History Check and all other security requirements set forth by Saga Education and the school district in which you serve before the start of training
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

You have an interest in math education and a strong understanding of Algebra and Geometric skills and concepts
You are passionate about youth development and addressing education inequity in underserved communities
You are committed to continuous learning and growth, have a strong feedback orientation, and actively seek professional development opportunities
You possess the mindsets, cultural proficiencies, and skills to build effective, caring relationships with students in the online setting
Demonstrated verbal/ written communication skills; including effectively communicating with constituents whose primary language may not be English.
Excellent organizational skills, with a high level of proficiency in using technology efficiently as a time management and organizing tool;
Computer proficiency and experience using MS Office Suite, online survey and communication tools; experience providing technical assistance and trouble-shooting issues.
Responsible for coordinating a function or operational effort in the Springfield Virtual School
Position requires some autonomy for decision making and independent judgment
Strong facilitation skills; experience in developing and leading interactive forums, workshops and training;
Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills
Experience working with diverse urban families, students and/or communities with an understanding of their unique needs;
Ability to establish and maintain strong community collaborations and to build a team and work in a fast-paced team environment;
An understanding of and commitment to gain greater understanding of what is necessary for an urban school system to enjoy continuous improvement in an increasingly complex and competitive environment;
Knowledge of Springfield Public School District
Experience in a youth development model and experience working with diverse populations
Ability to respond to questions from students

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

This position requires employee be in an office or similar indoor environment and field work. Employee is frequently exposed to individuals who are rude or irate and is occasionally exposed to individuals with known violent backgrounds.
