Position Summary:

The Department of Geography and the Environment at Villanova University invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor (continuing non-tenure track) position in Environmental Science starting in August 2024. We seek a colleague to teach in the environmental sciences to support the growth of the Department's undergraduate programs. A Ph.D. in environmental science or a related field is required. Exceptional candidates with at least six years of full-time undergraduate teaching experience will be considered for the rank of Associate Teaching Professor. Opportunities for promotion to Associate Teaching Professor and Full Teaching Professor exist with demonstrated excellence and leadership in teaching, ongoing scholarly engagement, and a strong record of service to the institution. The position is a 9-month academic appointment, and the incumbent will teach 16 contact hours per semester (for example, one course consisting of three hours of lecture plus three three-hour labs per week, or two separate courses each consisting of three hours of lecture and three-hours in lab each week). Our new colleague will primarily teach the two-semester introductory environmental science lecture and laboratory sequence for undergraduate Environmental Science and Environmental Studies majors, and there is also the opportunity to develop and teach more advanced courses and/or courses for non-majors. Excellence in teaching is the primary responsibility of this continuing non-tenure track position. In addition, our new colleague will be expected to demonstrate continued scholarly engagement with their discipline, develop new educational materials, mentor undergraduate independent research, and participate in departmental and institutional functions and committees. A willingness to mentor students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds is essential. We are especially interested in candidates whose teaching will contribute to the Department's commitment to diversity and academic excellence. The successful candidate will provide evidence of teaching effectiveness and compelling plans to develop student-professor research partnerships.

We foster an atmosphere of open dialogue and incorporate innovative classroom instruction, creative laboratory and field experiences, and student-led research to promote excellence in learning and teaching. Our goal is to develop students and faculty who engage in and are dedicated to critical thinking, open-ended problem solving, and a lifetime of learning.
