Role Description

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is seeking a full-time Route 66 Project Assistant to support preservation-focused GIS (Geographic Information Systems) efforts for the Preserve Route 66 Initiative.

This position will work as part of the GIS team to create public-facing tools to further document the condition of Route 66 at its centennial anniversary, and build greater understanding of the changes, evolution, and enduring historical resources of Route 66. Specific tasks may include:
• Digitizing past Route 66 historic surveys to compare with present on-the-ground conditions.
• Digitizing multiple historic alignments of Route 66 to support travel across the Route.
• Assisting with the creation of StoryMaps and other mapping applications to communicate findings.
• Other GIS-related tasks as needed to support the continuing efforts of the Preserve Route 66 Initiative.

Qualifications
• 1-2 years of relevant experience in GIS/Geography, data/computer science, preservation, planning, urban studies, public policy, or another related field.
• A demonstrated interest in GIS technology, historic preservation and cultural heritage, planning, and/or related field.
• Strong research and investigative skills.
• Basic proficiency in ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcGIS Online required.
• Basic analytical and problem-solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• Ability to collaborate and achieve results with supervision.
• Strong organizational skills required, with ability to prioritize, multi-task efficiently, and meet deadlines.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products required, including Outlook, Word, Teams, and Excel.
• Ability to work effectively in a remote environment, maintaining productivity and communications to meet deadlines and goals.

Benefits
• This is a full-time, non-exempt level position, eligible for full benefits, including health, dental and life insurance.
• Retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and 3+ weeks of vacation, plus sick time and holidays.
• Hiring Range: $50,000-55,000 per year.
