Science from Scientists (SciSci) has an exciting job opening for a Director of Development in our California office. The mission of Science from Scientists is to teach and inspire the next generation to identify and solve real-world problems by improving STEM literacy.

The California Director of Development is an experienced, passionate, and strategic leader who will support the Development Team and the Board to achieve the organization’s development agenda around individual giving, grants, foundation and corporate giving, events, volunteer and community engagement, school recruitment, and fundraising documentation for Science from Scientists. This position requires an attitude of growth and learning, a love of organization and communication, and a passion for supporting the work of SciSci.

This full-time position reports to the Chief Development Officer and is accountable for managing core fundraising tasks for the California office and programs department, including prospecting, grant proposal development, and reporting, and on and off-site events. This position also works with the other two regional Development Directors to support company-wide fundraising efforts. The Director of Development will provide cultivation and follow-up to support the team to meet individual giving targets, including managing donor research and identification, cultivation, and stewardship. This is a role with a growth opportunity for a learning-oriented professional to take on additional tasks and projects, including support of volunteers, program evaluation, and marketing.

Responsibilities

Corporate, Foundation, and Individual Fundraising:
• Research individual prospects and prepare summaries and recommendations for development staff and leadership.
• Participate in and lead meetings with individual prospects and donors, engaging them in supporting SciSci, including phone calls, in-person meetings, and program observations in schools.
• Prepare and send emails, letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and impact reports for donors; respond to all questions and inquiries.
• Work with CDO to prepare for annual/monthly budgets and forecasts.
• Ability to create and understand budgets and the budgeting process.
• Manage follow-up for CA donors, including correct and timely preparation of acknowledgment letters, tax receipts, and thank you notes.

Special Events:
• Create and manage event work plans and calendars to meet established donor cultivation and fundraising goals and objectives, including off-site events and any major fundraising events.
• Create, manage, and report on budget and work plan and coordinate all events, including integration and communication with all internal departments.
• Implement follow-up strategies after all fundraising activities and events to ensure the collection of contact information and appropriate appreciation and cultivation steps.
• Represent SciSci at relevant philanthropic, education, or STEM networking events.

Strategic:
• Maintain a thorough and current knowledge of SciSci’s programs, successes, and strategies and utilize this information to engage donors and volunteers to support the work of SciSci through fundraising and volunteer opportunities.
• Continually identify and integrate best practices in donor development.
• Help leadership to identify short and long-term development issues and challenges and suggest ideas or strategies to leadership.
• Keep informed of developments, issues, trends, and policies in the non-profit and education sectors that impact fund development.

Administrative Systems:
• Maintain up-to-date records of California donor lists, fundraising forecasts, stages, and next activities.
• Must have experience with Salesforce or similar CRM.
• Support development and finance through the preparation of check logs and recording of gifts and activities into the Salesforce database.
• Assist with frequent Salesforce review and optimization.
• Cupport regional school recruitment and strategy with CA Operations team

Requirements:
• Minimum of 5-7 years experience in fundraising or sales.
• Successful track record in securing gifts and developing long-term support.
• Ability to work independently and make progress on several prospects/projects at the same time.
• High attention to detail and deadlines.
• High level of self-confidence, creativity, self-motivation, and energy needed to undertake diverse responsibilities.
• Commitment to and passion for Science from Scientists mission and ability to translate programs into compelling fundraising appeals.
• English language fluency. Excellent public speaking, written, and presentation skills.
• Strong leadership and management skills, as well as the ability to forge strong interpersonal relationships.
• Excellent computer skills, including use of word processing, spreadsheets, database management presentation programs, and experience with Google Apps, especially Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive.
• Experience with prospect management software, Salesforce preferred.
• Current driver’s license and access to a car required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $65,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
