Highway Maintenance Supervisor I 2026-00841
Description And Functions
Open Until Filled
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a dedicated Highway Maintenance Supervisor I in Patrick Draw, Wyoming, to assist in managing the maintenance of roadways, roadway structures, buildings, rest areas, and other critical infrastructure. This position plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, quality, and efficiency of the state’s transportation system by supervising maintenance crews and overseeing daily operations to protect the traveling public.
Patrick Draw, located within the Red Desert near Rock Springs, is a striking and historically rich landscape known for its rugged beauty and remarkable sense of isolation. The Red Desert itself is one of the largest undeveloped regions in the lower 48 states, offering visitors a rare experience of wide-open space and tranquility that is increasingly hard to find.
Often described as a living “archive,” the area reveals layers of both natural and human history. Its geology tells a story millions of years in the making, with exposed sedimentary layers and vividly colored sandstone formations. At the same time, the land holds deep connections to westward expansion, including routes associated with the Oregon Trail, where emigrants once crossed this harsh but captivating terrain.
Wildlife is one of Patrick Draw’s most compelling features. The open, sagebrush-dominated landscape provides ideal habitat for species such as pronghorn, elk, wild horses, and greater sage-grouse. It is especially well known as a prime location to observe pronghorn moving freely across expansive, unobstructed terrain—one of the most iconic wildlife experiences in Wyoming.
The broader Red Desert region is equally dramatic, featuring multicolored badlands, rolling sagebrush plains, and the immense Killpecker Sand Dunes—one of the largest active dune systems in North America. Together, these elements create a landscape that feels both timeless and untamed, offering a powerful glimpse into the natural and cultural heritage of the American West.
