The Institutional product team is building a fully scaled markets business that serves the largest institutions (Investment Managers, Corporates, Hedge Funds, Marketmakers, Pensions etc.) in the world by providing the most highly-featured, capital efficient, robust platform across all “verbs” (buy, sell, store, lend, borrow, earn etc.) Access to derivatives and financing is a key requirement for many of these customers, and we believe that providing products to meet this need in a first-class, rigorously risk-controlled, institutional-grade way is a huge opportunity for Coinbase and the crypto economy overall.
Solving for this, the Institutional Risk Platform team operates a unified risk platform to effectively monitor, mitigate, and manage all forms of risk arising from Coinbase institutional leverage and credit products.
What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties):
We are looking for an experienced financial markets and/or product professional to i) originate a new organization-wide dedicated first line of defence (1LOD) risk management function, and ii) lead the ongoing development of the institutional risk management product suite that powers our established and industry-leading 2nd-line (2LOD) Risk team. This is a senior and high-profile role that will frequently involve working directly with Institutional and cross-functional leadership, and is expected to play a critical part in the continued growth and success of the Coinbase institutional franchise, and thus crypto markets overall.
You will:
Be responsible for 1st line oversight of market and counterparty credit risk across spot and derivatives platforms for all Institutional products, effectively coordinating XFN partners in Risk, Operations, Trading, and Product to holistically mitigate, monitor, and manage risks to Coinbase.
With your 2nd line Risk partners, define and analyse metrics to guide product operation, business development and risk management platform-wide
Align stakeholders and partner teams around a shared product vision and risk philosophy, and steer execution across multiple quarters. This will include coordination of market/credit risk engines and control implementation platform-wide, for example around customer execution controls and liquidations.
Manage the product life cycle for our internal risk reporting and management platform, from planning to execution on a mix of already-roadmapped and wholly-new products and features that serve the Coinbase Risk team. This will involve collaborating with Engineering, Design and other cross-functional teams to develop product concepts, document requirements and user journeys - ultimately to quarterback the rapid delivery of new capabilities and features to your internal customers.
Communicate progress on initiatives, KPIs, and risk metrics to cross-functional partners and executive leadership
What we look for in you (ie. job requirements):
7+ years relevant domain expertise in risk mgmt, risk modelling, and/or trading or marketmaking, AND experience in creating capabilities and in this area
Preferably product management or product development experience, but the bottom line is that you must be able to build, not just operate an (existing) world-class risk function.
Deep understanding of derivative and financing products, and of financial markets and marketplaces
Expertise in risk models, and trading systems, and experience working with a multi-line risk framework
Exceptional interpersonal communication, relationship management and organisational skills
Deep analytical, prioritisation and problem solving abilities, and the ability to work effectively with incomplete or ambiguous information
Demonstrated product leadership, including evidence of the ability to guide product strategy and create alignment with senior engineers, designers, and cross-functional partners
An entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to work independently, and the drive to break down barriers and make things happen
Proven in building a function and new capabilities - as opposed to managing something that already exists
Nice to haves:
Experience shipping new and iterating on successful products at scale
Ability to self-serve in data analysis
Comfort operating in matrix organisations
Experience building for or working with Institutional clients, ideally in lending, derivative or liquidity provision contexts
Passion for cryptocurrency, financial markets, and the Coinbase mission
