Alternate Games is a development team made by disabled people for disabled people. We create experimental, emotional, and unconventional games that explore complex human experiences. Our projects often blend narrative-heavy design with unusual mechanics and mature themes.
We are currently looking for a Game Designer who can also program to help build innovative interactive experiences, including projects with romance systems, dating mechanics, and mature/NSFW themes.
Role Overview
We need a designer who can both conceptualize game play systems and implement them technically. You will help design mechanics, build prototypes, and collaborate closely with writers, artists, and other developers to shape game play.
This role requires someone who is collaborative, respectful, and emotionally intelligent, as our team prioritizes accessibility, communication, and personal boundaries.
Responsibilities
• Design and prototype game play systems
• Implement mechanics through programming and scripting
• Collaborate with writers to integrate narrative and dating/relationship systems
• Work with artists and UI designers to create engaging player experiences
• Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate production
• Help iterate on experimental mechanics and unusual game play ideas
• Participate in respectful team communication and feedback
Required Skills
• Experience with game design and programming
• Ability to prototype mechanics independently
• Familiarity with AI tools for development, writing, or asset generation
• Experience designing romance, dating sim, or relationship systems
• Comfortable working with mature/NSFW themes
• Strong collaboration and communication skills
• Respect for team boundaries, accessibility needs, and inclusive work practices
Nice to Have
• Experience with dating sims, adult games, or relationship-focused mechanics
• Narrative design experience
• Knowledge of AI-assisted pipelines for game development
