Join the Rock Valley College Team as a Dynamic Tutor in the Writing Center Rock Valley College is seeking a highly skilled and passionate individual to join our team as a Tutor in the Writing Center. Our Writing Center Tutors work one-on-one with students across the curriculum, providing guidance on comprehension of assignment expectations, development of writing skills, and execution of formal writing styles. Key Responsibilities Tutor and coach students in assignment comprehension and a range of writing skills, including rhetoric, grammar, and mechanics. Facilitate learning to assist students in becoming successful, independent learners and proficient writers. Maintain high ethical standards while providing constructive feedback on writing assignments. Prepare for and tutor individual or small groups of students in writing across the curriculum, both in-person and online. Conduct guest workshops, mini-lessons, or review sessions for specific instructors upon request. Use Upswing to review and evaluate submitted student writing assignments in a timely manner. Communicate effectively with the office and coordinator, maintaining efficient records of appointments and submitting session reports. Develop supplemental instructional materials, including handouts, study guides, tip sheets, and quizzes. Perform light in-center office duties as needed. Provide regular in-person and/or online availability for student sessions and assignment review. Requirements and Qualifications Essential Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree in English or a related field is required; a Master's degree is desirable. Experience in English instruction and/or coursework in classroom pedagogy is preferred. Experience teaching ESL and/or instructing diverse learners is desirable. Coursework in the field of adult education is preferred. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students, faculty, and staff. Proficiency in basic computer skills and willingness to adapt to new technology. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with online learning platforms and tools. Familiarity with Upswing or similar educational software. Previous experience in a tutoring or teaching role. Skills and Competencies To succeed in this role, you will need: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Strong knowledge of writing skills, including grammar, mechanics, and rhetoric. Ability to work effectively with diverse students, faculty, and staff. Flexibility and adaptability in dealing with various learning styles and needs.
