Key Responsibilities and Duties As a part-time non-certified Chinese Mandarin tutor, you will be responsible for: Tutoring SLCC students taking First and Second Semester Chinese (CHI 1010, 1020, 2010, 2020) both in-person at the Center for Languages and online via Zoom. Assisting students with understanding and leveraging their course's instructional materials and assignments, as well as online language-learning programs as needed. Establishing and maintaining tutoring hours throughout the semester/academic year. Attending Center for Languages (CfL) meetings, completing required trainings, and consistently following protocols for scheduling, checking in/out, time submission, and communicating unavoidable absences. Helping to organize and host cultural events along with other tutors and/or language faculty. Participating in CfL activities, including occasional brief, informal cultural presentations to other tutors, students, and faculty. Hosting weekly or biweekly conversation tables for speakers of the target language in the CfL, depending on demand. Creating a 2-3 minute video at the beginning of every semester to introduce yourself to students in the language class, which will be posted on the language instructor's Canvas site. Minimum Qualifications and Requirements To be considered for this role, you must: Have a high school diploma or equivalent. Possess good computer skills. Demonstrate native or near-native fluency in Chinese, as verified through online proficiency testing in the CfL. Be familiar with Chinese cultures. Agree to observe the SLCC Student Code of Conduct. Preferred Qualifications and Skills We are looking for candidates with: Current student status at SLCC. A minimum GPA of 3.0. Language teaching or tutoring experience. Availability to attend SLCC classes in the target language, with the approval of the course instructor. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities To succeed in this role, you should possess: Reliability, timeliness, and attention to detail. Increasing knowledge of Chinese 1010, 1020, 2010, and 2020, as well as teaching methods and course textbooks, materials, and assignments. Increasing competence in tutoring, focusing on textbook integration, identifying student level of competence, and tailoring instruction to the student level, needs, and instructor expectations. Effective communication skills, with the ability to work with a broad range of diverse people, including students, faculty, and staff from various backgrounds and abilities.
