To address this need, we are seeking an experienced and passionate First Generation Academic Mentor to join our team. Job Overview The First Generation Academic Mentor will play a vital role in supporting students who are navigating introductory and historically difficult subjects. This position requires a strong understanding of the challenges faced by first-generation students and the ability to provide tailored guidance and support to ensure their academic success. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with instructors, attend workshops and trainings, and maintain ongoing communication with the Director of Student Transitions to ensure a comprehensive approach to student support. Key Responsibilities Work collaboratively with instructors to identify and intervene with students who are struggling with course content Meet with instructors to discuss the role and obtain information to ensure effectiveness Attend all workshops and trainings to enhance knowledge and skills Provide intervention during group work and directed class activities Keep regular and accurate records of study group sessions and one-on-one meetings Make referrals to other resources, such as tutoring, to students in need of targeted help Maintain ongoing communication with the Director of Student Transitions and instructors Demonstrate a high level of professional ethics and adhere to all external and internal regulations and policies Provide exceptional customer service, anticipating and exceeding the needs of students Demonstrate and promote the University's Cultural Values Qualifications and Requirements To be considered for this role, candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree, with a Master's degree preferred. The ideal candidate will have teaching or tutoring experience, preferably in higher education, and a demonstrated ability to establish rapport with students from diverse backgrounds. Excellent interpersonal communication skills, motivational and problem-solving capabilities, and a high degree of integrity and ethics are essential for success in this position. Essential Qualifications Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred Demonstrated ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate with students Teaching or tutoring experience (preferably in higher education or training) preferred Earned grade of a B+ or higher in the same course(s) in which they wish to work Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive working environment Preferred Qualifications Experience working with first-generation students Knowledge of academic support services and resources Familiarity with NCAA, GLIAC, and national affiliations associated with athletics or other role-specific regulations Experience with customer service and conflict resolution Skills and Competencies The successful candidate will possess a range of skills and competencies, including: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds Strong problem-solving and motivational capabilities High degree of integrity, ethics, and dedication to the mission of the University Ability to work an irregular schedule, including evenings and Saturdays as needed Career Growth Opportunities and Learning Benefits At Davenport University, we are committed to supporting the professional development and growth of our employees.
