About the Role: Distributed Systems Engineer (L4) - Data Platform

We're seeking a talented Distributed Systems Engineer to join our Data Platform team, a critical component of Netflix's infrastructure. As a Distributed Systems Engineer, you'll play a key role in advancing and growing our data infrastructure, enabling us to deliver exceptional experiences to our members worldwide. This is an exciting opportunity to work on complex, large-scale systems that power our business, and to be part of a team that's shaping the future of entertainment.

Key Responsibilities:


Design, develop, and maintain large-scale distributed systems that meet the evolving needs of Netflix's business.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, product management, and technical program management, to drive projects forward and deliver results.
Solve complex technical problems, applying your programming and analytical skills to tackle challenges at scale.
Build robust, scalable, and highly available distributed infrastructure that meets the demands of a rapidly growing business.
Contribute to the open-source community, sharing your expertise and experiences with the world.


Focus Areas within the Data Platform Team:

The Data Platform team is comprised of several focus areas, each playing a vital role in enabling Netflix's data-driven decision-making. These areas include:


Database Access Platform: Building and operating a scalable query gateway that enables Netflix microservices to efficiently store, consume, and manage their data.
Data Platform Infrastructure: Creating high-impact infrastructure, control, and deployment systems that are tailored to the needs of running our data systems at scale.
Data Development and Processing: Enabling diverse user personas across Netflix to meet their low-latency data development and processing needs through a self-service, abstracted platform.
Big Data Compute: Providing a cloud-native platform for distributed data processing at Netflix, supporting frameworks like Spark, Presto/Trino, and Druid.
Big Data Orchestration: Offering a platform for scheduling, orchestrating, and executing big data jobs and workflows in a self-serve manner.


Qualifications and Requirements:

To succeed in this role, you'll need:


2+ years of experience building large-scale distributed systems or applications.
Proficiency in designing and developing RESTful web services.
Experience building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed systems.
Knowledge of Java or other object-oriented programming languages.
Comfort with multi-threading and concurrency.
A BS in Computer Science or a related field.


Preferred Qualifications:


Experience with Python, given its widespread use within our Data Platform Infrastructure team.
Familiarity with open-source technologies like Kafka, Flink, and Iceberg.
Background in data processing, analytics, or a related field.
