Experienced Assistant Teaching Professor in Biology for Remote Undergraduate Education and Research Opportunities

Position Overview We are excited to offer a non-tenure line assistant/associate teaching professor position starting in Fall 2024, with a focus on teaching our introductory undergraduate lecture and laboratory course in Function and Development of Organisms (BIOL 240W). This course takes an integrated approach to the comparative physiology of both plants and animals/humans, and we are looking for someone with a strong background in plant and/or animal/human physiology, as well as laboratory teaching experience in these areas. The ideal candidate will have experience with using active learning and other best practices in large lecture settings, and will be able to contribute to the development of our undergraduate program. Key Responsibilities Teach introductory undergraduate lecture and laboratory courses in biology, with a focus on Function and Development of Organisms (BIOL 240W) Develop and implement inquiry-based class exercises and assessments that promote active learning and student engagement Recruit and train laboratory teaching assistants and lecture learning assistants to be effective members of an instructional team Contribute to curriculum design and assessment, and participate in departmental meetings and activities Maintain a high level of expertise in the field of biology, and stay current with new developments and technologies Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching and learning skills Essential Qualifications To be considered for this position, candidates must have: A Master's Degree in a Biological field (Ph.D. preferred) At least two years of teaching experience in relevant courses, with a focus on undergraduate education A demonstrated interest in pedagogy and the application of research-based teaching methods Experience with using active learning strategies in large lecture settings Documented excellence in teaching, with a strong commitment to student learning and success Preferred Qualifications Preferred candidates will have: A Ph.D. in a Biological field, with a strong research background and experience publishing original research Experience with curriculum design and assessment, and a commitment to innovative and effective teaching practices Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff A strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a willingness to contribute to a positive and inclusive learning environment Skills and Competencies To be successful in this role, candidates will need to possess: Strong knowledge of biological principles and concepts, with a focus on plant and/or animal/human physiology Excellent teaching and communication skills, with the ability to engage and motivate students Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities Ability to work effectively in a team environment, with a commitment to collaboration and mutual respect Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a willingness to contribute to a positive and inclusive learning environment Career Growth Opportunities and Learning Benefits As an Assistant Teaching Professor in Biology at Penn State, you will have the opportunity to: Develop and refine your teaching skills, with support from our faculty and staff Contribute to the development of our undergraduate program, and help shape the future of biology education at Penn State Participate in professional development opportunities, and stay current with new developments and technologies in the field of biology Collaborate with colleagues from across the university, and contribute to a positive and inclusive learning environment Pursue opportunities for promotion and advancement, with the potential for long-term career growth and development Work Environment and Company Culture At Penn State, we are committed to providing a positive and inclusive work environment, with a strong focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
