EDP Programmer II
About the position
The position involves supporting the research and teaching missions of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UMass Amherst by maintaining the integrity of operating systems, software, and hardware for various computing environments. The role requires ensuring smooth operations of departmental computer systems, providing technical support, and collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to meet their computing needs.
Responsibilities
Ā Install, maintain and configure hardware components, operating systems, and application software on workstations, desktops, and laptops.

Ā Create and update shell scripts for monitoring and improving system performance.
,
Ā Provision department computer systems and ensure compliance with security standards.
,
Ā Install, configure, customize, and maintain mathematical/statistical software and editing software on departmental computers.
,
Ā Provide technical support to users of the department computing facilities.
,
Ā Assist in organizing and conducting computer training seminars and prepare teaching materials.
,
Ā Work closely with faculty, staff, and students to support their computing and networking needs.
,
Ā Independently research and resolve issues in system and network administration duties.
,
Ā Suggest improvements for the department's computing environment.
,
Ā Install, maintain, and upgrade critical network services in a primarily UNIX and Linux-based server environment.
,
Ā Support departmental high-performance Linux cluster.
,
Ā Install, customize, and maintain network hardware and software components; monitor network operations.
,
Ā Install and maintain electronic system security tools; monitor system security.
,
Ā Respond to security events and ensure compliance with security standards.
,
Ā Perform infrastructure security evaluations and audits for the math department.
,
Ā Implement real-time intrusion detection systems and wireless security auditing mechanisms.
,
Ā Develop and implement plans to ensure high reliability and availability of critical systems within the department.
,
Ā Develop recovery plans to minimize outages and improve recovery time.
Requirements
Ā Two years of relevant experience.
,
Ā An associate degree or above can substitute one year of relevant experience.
,
Ā Experience supporting mail, web, file, print, identity management, backup, encryption, and network storage services.
,
Ā Experience using C, Perl, bash, and Python to customize in-house software.
,
Ā Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
,
Ā Knowledge of computer network protocols, TCP/IP, NFS, SMTP, HTTP.
,
Ā Experience with Windows Server Administration.
,
Ā Experience managing high-performance computing clusters.
,
Ā Experience with CentOS and MacOS X.
,
Ā Experience in information security best practices and highly available enterprise network architecture.
