Job Summary

As a Bilingual Teaching Assistant, you will work under the supervision of a bilingual teacher or regular classroom teacher to support students' learning and behavioral objectives. Your responsibilities will include:


Working with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher
Translating written documents at the request of the bilingual teacher, building principal, ELL Coordinator, or front office personnel
Serving as an interpreter for parent conferences and telephone calls as needed
Assisting in the preparation of instructional materials
Serving as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher in the absence of the bilingual teacher
Providing clerical assistance to the bilingual teacher, such as filing, record keeping, data entry, and copying
Establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with others


Key Responsibilities

As a Bilingual Teaching Assistant, you will be responsible for:

Supporting Student Learning


Working with students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher
Providing individualized support to students to help them achieve their learning objectives
Assisting students with language barriers to access educational resources and services


Communication and Interpretation


Translating written documents at the request of the bilingual teacher, building principal, ELL Coordinator, or front office personnel
Serving as an interpreter for parent conferences and telephone calls as needed
Communicating effectively with students, teachers, and parents to ensure student success


Instructional Support


Assisting in the preparation of instructional materials
Serving as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher in the absence of the bilingual teacher
Providing clerical assistance to the bilingual teacher, such as filing, record keeping, data entry, and copying


Requirements and Qualifications

To be considered for this position, you must:

Education and Experience


Have an NCLB paraprofessional approval (or be exempt with a valid Illinois teaching or substitute certificate)
Be bi-lingual in English and Russian or Ukrainian
Meet at least one of the four requirements:

60 semester hours of college-level credit
Completed paraprofessional training program approved by ISBE or ICCB
Passed ETS ParaPro assessment (460 or higher)
Passed WorkKeys assessments (Applied Mathematics-4, Reading for Information-4, Writing/Business Writing-3, and Acceptable on Instructional Support Inventory)




Skills and Competencies


Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and parents
Strong organizational and time management skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other educational software
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information
