Job SummaryThe AWS RDS SQL Database Administrator is responsible for managing and maintaining relational database systems within Department of Navy systems. This role ensures the availability, performance, security, and scalability of AWS Relational Database Service (RDS) instances while adhering to strict organizational policies and compliance requirements. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in cloud infrastructure management, database administration, and cybersecurity best practices within a cloud environment.As with any position, additional expectations exist. Some of these include, but are not limited to, adhering to normal working hours, meeting deadlines, following company policies as outlined by the Employee Handbook, communicating regularly with assigned supervisor(s), staying focused on the assigned tasks, and completing other tasks as assigned.ResponsibilitiesDatabase Management & Cloud InfrastructureManage and maintain AWS RDS instances for SQL databases, including configuration, optimization, and monitoringConfigure and manage parameter groups, security groups, and storage options for RDS instancesPerform routine maintenance tasks including backups, patching, and updates to ensure system reliabilityImplement high availability and disaster recovery solutions using AWS features such as Read Replicas and Multi-AZ deploymentsConfigure automated backups and snapshots for AWS RDS instances to ensure data integritySecurity & ComplianceEnsure database security by implementing encryption for data at rest and in transit, access controls, and auditingApply Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) and ensure compliance with the Risk Management Framework (RMF) and other regulatory standardsConduct regular vulnerability scans and remediate findings using tools such as Assured Compliance Assessment Solution (ACAS)Develop and test disaster recovery plans to ensure rapid restoration in the event of failurePerformance Optimization & MonitoringMonitor database health and performance using AWS tools like CloudWatch, Performance Insights, and Enhanced MonitoringAnalyze and optimize database queries, indexes, and schema designs to improve performance and resource utilizationUse AWS Query Performance Insights to identify and resolve technical bottlenecksGenerate detailed reports on database metrics, including uptime and storage utilization, for stakeholdersDocumentation & CollaborationMaintain detailed documentation of database configurations, processes, and proceduresWork closely with application developers, system administrators, and security teams to ensure seamless integrationUtilize ticketing software including ServiceNow and Jira for task managementBasic QualificationsMust be a U.S. CitizenBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related fieldProficiency in SQL database management, including schema design and performance tuningExperience with AWS RDS features such as Multi-AZ deployments, Read Replicas, and Performance InsightsHands-on experience with cloud infrastructure management tools such as AWS CloudWatch, CloudFormation, and IAMKnowledge of database security practices, including encryption and auditingActive DoD Secret clearance or the ability to obtain oneIf applicable: If you are or have been recently employed by the U.S. government by the U.S. government, a post-employment ethics letter will be required if employment with VSolvit is offeredPreferred QualificationsActive DoD Secret or Top Secret clearanceExperience implementing DISA STIGs for SQL databases in an AWS environmentFamiliarity with Navy RMF processes and ACAS scanningAWS Certified Database – Specialty or AWS Certified Solutions ArchitectCompany SummaryJoin the VSolvit Team!
