AVP, Actuarial Models
Job Summary
The AVP, Actuarial Models is responsible for overseeing and directing the Actuarial Models team, using primarily the Moody’s AXIS actuarial modeling software. Responsibilities include overseeing development, peer review of development and integration of coding changes to the corporate model, including changes for new product implementation, enhanced product features, new regulatory requirements, new lines of business, and support for strategic initiatives including reinsurance.
Organization
This position reports to the VP, Actuarial Models and will interact with multiple levels of senior management, including significant ongoing exposure with VPs of Actuarial, Finance, IT and Risk, as well as SVPs of Finance, Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), Retail and Institutional Business Units, and the Chief Actuary and Chief Risk Officer. This is a leadership position and will manage a team of 8-10 actuaries and technicians, including responsibility for their selection, training and development in conjunction with the Chief Actuary and Human Resources’ overall training and staff development plan for all actuaries.
Duties and Responsibilities
Overseeing all aspects of the Corporate Model
Accurate and timely execution of job functions are high priorities for this position as key management decisions and external reporting are based on the results of actuarial models
Disciplined execution of model governance protocols is essential to ensure timeliness and accuracy of actuarial model output
Organizing and directing prioritization for integrating model changes
Ensuring proper controls are followed and documented for the Production region
Maintain clear model documentation covering things such as methodologies and assumptions sets supporting each model release
Delegating and overseeing model change development work to staff as needed
Serving as a modeling expert for other actuarial teams on modeling best practices and assisting with training new staff
Driving for process improvements and efficiencies.
Experience and Education Requirements
Bachelors Degree in Actuarial Science, Math, Finance, Statistics or other related area
Minimum ASA; FSA preferred
Seven to ten years of experience with actuarial models required
4+ years experience leading a team
1+ years experience in formal controls and working with auditors is preferred
Skills and Abilities
Highly motivated, self-starter & team player with a high energy level and willingness to take on responsibility
Strong working knowledge of actuarial modeling systems; AXIS experience preferred
Excellent team-building skills, with the ability to recruit, retain, coach, delegate and mentor top-quality staff
Highly organized and disciplined enforcer of model governance protocols
Strong understanding of actuarial projections and interactions between various product features and actuarial calculation results
Able to work and effectively communicate with employees at all levels and from various areas within the Company
Open and direct communicator who provides clear direction with a results-oriented style
Unconditional integrity and commitment to delivering accurate information on schedule with committed dates of delivery
Able to fully assess deliverable requirements against allocated resources setting priorities and calling on additional resources as required
Ability to participate in establishing goals, structures, and processes necessary to implement a mission and strategic vision
Strong problem-solving skills that include advanced analytical and reasoning abilities, and ability to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously
Support effective partnerships with key groups and individuals while possessing superior consultation and change management skills
