Salem-Keizer Public Schools is seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to join our team as an AVID Tutor for the 2023-24 school year. As an AVID Tutor, you will play a critical role in supporting students in achieving their full potential and making progress toward college and career readiness skills. This is a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic educational environment, utilizing specific teaching methodologies and materials to facilitate collaborative learning and Socratic questioning techniques.

About AVID and Our Mission

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program designed to support students in achieving academic success and preparing for college and careers. As an AVID Tutor, you will be working with students in study groups and individually, assisting them in all academic areas. Key Responsibilities


Conduct in-person tutorial sessions that emphasize collaborative learning and student-led discussions
Determine concepts that need to be focused on during tutorial sessions, based on student worksheets, notes, and discussions
Guide students in taking ownership of their learning, using strategies that promote independent learning
Assist students in any subject area, familiarizing yourself with their textbooks, materials, and AVID classroom resources
Provide constructive feedback on student work, both online and in-person
Support AVID scholars through care and connection, fostering a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere
Assist the AVID coordinator with various tasks, such as contacting teachers, helping with field trips, and communicating with parents
Communicate regularly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern
Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow

To be successful as an AVID Tutor, you should possess the following qualifications and characteristics:


Be an excellent role model of a motivated, organized, and successful college student
Believe in the potential of AVID students to succeed and be willing to support them in achieving their goals
Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and parents
Be familiar with or willing to learn AVID teaching methodologies and materials
Demonstrate a commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment


Essential and Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are essential and preferred for the AVID Tutor position:


Currently enrolled in or have completed a college or university program
Experience working with students in an educational setting (preferred)
Familiarity with AVID teaching methodologies and materials (preferred)
Strong academic record and ability to demonstrate personal excellence
