Job Overview
As an Academic Tutor in our Writing and Study Skills Center, you will report to the WSSC Program Manager and provide support to students in writing, reading, study skills, and student success strategies. Your primary responsibilities will include:
Providing one-on-one and small group tutoring to students in writing and study skills
Guiding students who need additional help with designated subject area classwork
Collaborating with faculty to provide supplemental instruction to students seeking assistance
Helping students develop study plans and strategies
Participating in staff professional development and training
Performing related duties based on departmental need
Key Responsibilities
Tutoring and Instruction
Provide individualized and small group instruction to students in writing, reading, study skills, and student success strategies
Develop and implement effective lesson plans and tutoring strategies to meet the diverse needs of students
Assess student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
Communication and Collaboration
Communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff to provide support and guidance
Collaborate with faculty to provide supplemental instruction and support to students
Participate in staff meetings and professional development activities
Student Support and Success
Foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment that promotes student success
Help students develop study plans and strategies to achieve academic success
Provide guidance and support to students in a holistic and student-success oriented perspective
Requirements and Qualifications
Essential Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in English or a related discipline
One (1) year of teaching or tutoring experience
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively with diverse populations
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in English, Creative Writing, Reading, or a related field
Experience teaching or tutoring one or more of the following areas: English as a Second Language, reading, writing study skills, and student success strategies
Willingness to be trained to tutor in relevant areas of support beyond writing
Experience with remedial learning and experience working with potentially unprepared students
Higher education experience

Work Schedule and Location
Average weekly hours will be greater during the Fall and Spring semesters (approx. 32-38 hours per week)
Hours are reduced during the summer semester (approx. 28 hours/week) for a total of 1664 hours per year
The working schedule may require evening hours and occasional weekend work at conferences, orientations, open houses, etc.
This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule with the option for one remote working day a week during summer terms only
Residence must be within the Cincinnati Tri-State area (OH/IN/KY) with reasonable distance to campus to have the ability to report to campus as required
Compensation and Benefits
Competitive salary range of $30,000 - $33,000 dependent on the candidate's experience
