About the role:
As the Product Reviewer, you will report directly to the Senior Shopping Editor and play a vital role in our team. Your mission is to delve into the world of power tools and equipment, providing our Family Handyman readers with insightful solutions to their DIY and homeownership challenges. You will engage in hands-on testing and thorough research, evaluating a diverse range of consumer products, from riding lawn mowers and snow blowers to chainsaws and woodchippers. While prior professional experience in photography and video is not mandatory, an eagerness to learn and even step in front of the camera will be an asset. We are seeking an individual who is at ease testing and assessing large outdoor equipment, possessing the expertise to pinpoint top-tier products within this category.
About you:
You are no stranger to using outdoor power equipment, whether through professional landscaping expertise or your role as a knowledgeable homeowner managing extensive property. Your ability to communicate the distinguishing features of various equipment to a non-specialist audience is exceptional. Ideally, you possess writing skills and a basic grasp of product photography and videography ? even if you have only worked with a smartphone. The prospect of being on camera does not intimidate you.
Your understanding of the Family Handyman audience guides you in tailoring product recommendations to match their preferences, requirements, and purchasing habits. Your status as a content consumer and online shopper equips you to identify opportunities through creative pursuits and trendspotting.
Your day-to-day:
? Research, curate, and test a range of power tools large and small, working with the Senior Shopping Editor to create full-length product reviews complete with necessary video and photography as needed
? Contribute ideas for video scripts that capture the product's unique and problem-solving qualities, collaborating with the team where necessary
? Collaborate with the TMB Milwaukee team to secure suitable find locations for product testing and acquire necessary props as needed
? Work alongside the Shopping Editorial team to identify new coverage opportunities to help further differentiate Family Handyman's review content
? Participate in brainstorming sessions for content clusters, trends, and other editorial initiatives
You have:
? Demonstrated experience with all types of outdoor power equipment and a basic understanding of how/where people shop for these products
? Previous hands-on product review experience preferred, especially for a digital publication
? Some experience or strong interest in script writing and/or on-camera work
? Knowledge of SEO keywords and research tools preferred
? Experience with workshop-style tools (such as table saws) is a plus
? Experience managing multiple projects at one time and consistently meeting deadlines; quickly changing course as data evolves
? Ability to work independently, but also as part of an evolving, dynamic team
? For on-site candidates, the ability to commute to our Milwaukee studio is necessary. Remote candidates must have access to adequate space for testing large equipment, such as riding lawn mowers
