Position: Wisconsin School of Business SOAR 2026 Graduate Advisor

Department Overview

The Wisconsin School of Business (WSB) Student Orientation, Advising, & Registration (SOAR) Program seeks to introduce incoming UW‑Madison students to the academic requirements and opportunities that are available to them through the majors and certificates within WSB. In conjunction with SOAR programming provided by the Office of Student Transition & Family Engagement (OSTFE), WSB SOAR is an integral component of the new student experience that welcomes a variety of incoming students including, but not limited to, Direct Admit students, Pre‑Business students, Transfer students, and Cohort students.

The WSB SOAR Program seeks to be an innovative leader in advising practices at UW‑Madison through advising these students at SOAR.

• July 14‑17

• July 21‑24

• August 4‑7
• In‑Person Transfer SOAR (College Library) 12 PM – 4:30 PM on the following dates:

• July 10

• July 27
• Virtual SOAR (3150 Grainger Hall) 8:45 AM – 4:30 PM on the following dates:

• July 7‑10

• July 28‑31
• • August 10‑14*
• Remote work‑days

Time Commitment:
You are welcome to have other summer obligations (employment/classes) provided they do not conflict with the SOAR schedule listed above.
Compensation and Positions

Salary/Wage Range: $20.00/hour

Number of Positions: 3‑4
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree required
• Graduate Student status at UW‑Madison required
• Graduation date from graduate program must be later than Spring 2026
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Strong interest in working with undergraduate students in a student services setting
• Available to work the required training and SOAR dates
• Professional attention to detail and excellent time management skills
• Exceptional writing, communication, and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse populations
• Commitment to giving our SOAR students a strong foundation for success by welcoming them into the WSB community
Position Summary /

Job Duties
• Collaboratively present academic and curriculum information via PowerPoint presentation to groups of 20‑40 students
• Advise newly admitted WSB Direct Admit and Pre‑Business students in small group and one‑on‑one situations regarding their academic course plan and answer other questions pertaining to UW‑Madison
• Use campus tools including Microsoft Teams, SOAR Wiki, SOAR Reservation System, Transfer Credit Evaluations, Advising Gateway, and the SOAR Advising Module to interpret, analyze, and communicate student records and advising information
• Make referrals to other on‑campus resources as needed, including but not limited to Admissions, Veterans Services, University Housing, Study Abroad, and student involvement opportunities
• Create accurate and detailed advising notes for each student interaction
• Attend all assigned trainings
• Other projects and duties as assigned
Physical Demands

Basic office tasks (i.e. using computers and laptops, moving around the advising space to talk with different students, and carrying office supplies weighing less than 10 pounds between work locations when necessary)
