Wake Forest University’s Environment and Sustainability Studies Program seeks an engaged, creative, and committed teacher-scholar for a one-year, non-tenure track Visiting Assistant Professor position in Remote Sensing, with experience in geographic information systems (GIS). The position begins July 1, 2026.

Qualifications: We welcome candidates with a Ph.D. in geography, environmental studies, anthropology, environmental engineering, conservation biology, environmental sciences, natural resource management, forestry, or related fields. ABDs will also be considered. Compelling applicants will have a commitment to interdisciplinary, experiential, and place-based learning and a record of teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.

Position Description: The teaching load is three courses per semester, or the equivalent in lab-based courses(typically two lab courses per semester). Courses taught may include Remote Sensing (applied theory and methodology, with an emphasis on satellite imagery and existing aerial datasets), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) (introductory GIS, including geovisualization methods and techniques), and/or Environmental Issues (a divisional course exploring foundational challenges in sustainability and human-environmental systems). Successful candidates will have experience with common industry tools, techniques, and methods as implemented through ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, and/or Google Earth Engine.

About the Environment and Sustainability Studies Program: The successful candidate will join an innovative and interdisciplinary group of scholars from the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences who address the environment and sustainability. The mission of the Environment and Sustainability Studies Program is to prepare students to create just and sustainable futures, which we enact by teaching students how to think across disciplinary boundaries to address environmental challenges and to act within their communities for environmental and climate justice.
