VI Teacher

Remote Full-time
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to join our team!

A teacher of the visually impaired plays a crucial role in supporting students with visual impairments to succeed academically and socially in a school setting. Responsibilities include the following:

- Collaborating with other educators, parents, and specialists to develop and implement IEPs tailored to each student’s needs. This involves setting specific, measurable goals and determining appropriate accommodations and modifications.

- Teaching Adaptive Skills: Instructing students in the use of assistive technology, braille, orientation and mobility, and other adaptive techniques that can help them navigate their environment and access the curriculum.

- Curriculum Adaptation: Modifying instructional materials and classroom environments to ensure accessibility. This might involve converting texts into braille or audio formats, adjusting visual aids, or providing tactile materials.

- Instruction and Support: Providing direct instruction in areas such as braille reading and writing, orientation and mobility, and daily living skills. Additionally, TVIs often support students in developing self-advocacy skills and independence.

- Collaboration: Working closely with general education teachers, special education staff, and other professionals to ensure that the student’s needs are being met and to provide guidance on best practices for inclusion.

- Assessment and Evaluation: Regularly assessing the student’s progress, adjusting instruction and accommodations as needed, and providing feedback to the student, parents, and school team.

- Family Support: Engaging with families to offer guidance, support, and resources that can help them advocate for their child’s needs and assist with home-based learning and skill development.

- Creating an Inclusive Environment: Promoting an understanding and supportive atmosphere among peers and staff to foster an inclusive educational environment.

Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s Degree: You must have a bachelor's degree in education, special education, or a related field. Some programs may offer a specialization in visual impairments.

- Teacher Certification: You need to hold a valid Texas teaching certificate. If you’re already certified as a general education or special education teacher, you can add the TVI certification to your credentials.

- Certification for Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments: To be specifically certified as a teacher of students with visual impairments in Texas, you need to pass the TExES (Texas Examination of Educator Standards) exam for Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments.

To summarize, you need a bachelor’s degree, a valid Texas teaching certificate, and to pass the TExES exam for Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments.
