The University of Utah’s School of Environment, Society & Sustainability, in partnership with the Wilkes Center for Climate Science, provides a collaborative and interdisciplinary setting for students to engage in leading-edge research with global impact.

Research Topic and Significance

The PhD position focuses on integrating satellite remote sensing, data science, and artificial intelligence to study water resources and environmental hazards. This research is crucial in today’s context, where climate change, population growth, and urbanization intensify the frequency and severity of hydrologic and environmental hazards such as floods, coastal sea level rise, and proglacial changes. By harnessing advanced technologies and datasets—such as NASA’s Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission, NISAR data, Gravity data, and GNSS datasets—the research aims to enhance our understanding and monitoring of water bodies, hydrologic cycles, and geophysical transformations. The outcomes of this work have the potential to inform policy, improve hazard mitigation strategies, and promote sustainable water resource management on a global scale.
