Department Summary

The Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Recreation has over 1,300 students and offers a bachelor's and a master's degree in Kinesiology and a PhD in Human Performance and Movement Science. Graduate students can specialize their training across several areas including exercise physiology, sport and exercise psychology, and sport pedagogy & motor behavior. Current research laboratories include the Applied Physiology Laboratory (where this position will primarily be housed), Pediatric Movement and Physical Activity Laboratory, Sport and Exercise Psychophysiology Laboratory, Sport Physical Activity and Health Laboratory, and Physical Activity and Psychomotor Learning Laboratory. The linked highlights the capabilities of our laboratories for current and future research.

The Applied Physiology Laboratory (APL) is a collaborative research facility which also includes a large, shared biochemistry laboratory space with a wide array of state-of-the-art equipment (see video). In addition, the APL also has dedicated research spaces for exercise testing and training, muscle and adipose biopsies, and phlebotomy, clinical studies (with adjustable bed and TV), body composition assessment (DXA and BIA), and an array of cardiovascular and autonomic testing. Other spaces house a lower body negative pressure chamber (Technavance), a heat/cold chamber, and a large float tank for sensory deprivation. The APL is equipped to perform indirect calorimetry (metabolic carts and a portable COSMED K5), continuous blood pressure monitoring (Finapres NOVA), microneurography (AD Instruments, NeuroAmp), transcranial Doppler ultrasound (DWL), and peripheral vascular ultrasound assessments (Terason, USmart 3300), with specialized arterial wall tracking software for assessment of flow mediated dilation (Quipu, Cardiovascular Suite), wireless EMG and EKG (Biopac), force/power/velocity measurements (AMTI force plates and linier position transducers) and more. The research spaces and major equipment in the APL are shared among KHPR faculty. Further information about facilities and equipment in the APL is available upon application and request.

Position Summary

The Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Recreation at the University of North Texas invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with expertise in exercise physiology or related area (e.g., biochemistry, immunology, metabolism) to begin in Fall 2024. It is expected that the applicant will be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the department's exercise physiology curriculum, as well as have an active and focused research agenda with potential for, or success in, obtaining external grant or industry funding. The successful applicant will be able to collaborate with, complement, and expand the ongoing research in the shared Applied Physiology Laboratory (Drs. Caldwell, Deemer, Hill, McFarlin, Sprick, and Vingren). Tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students. A typical teaching load is two organized courses in each of the long semesters (2:2). Experience with teaching online and hybrid courses using Canvas or a similar learning management system is desirable.
Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have an earned doctorate (PhD or equivalent) in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Biochemistry, Exercise Molecular Biology, Exercise/Sport Nutrition, Exercise Immunology, or closely related field at the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications

-At least 2 years of post-doctoral training
-Teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels
-Research experience with demonstrated scholarship via first-authored publications
-Demonstrated potential for successful extramural funding.
