Job Summary We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Remote Asynchronous Writing Tutor to join our team on a seasonal basis. As a Writing Tutor, you will play a vital role in helping students develop their writing skills and become more confident communicators. This is a unique opportunity to work with a diverse range of students, provide insightful feedback, and make a lasting impact on their academic journeys. Key Responsibilities: Provide thorough, insightful, and actionable written feedback to student essays and writing assignments, aligning with Upswing's tutoring philosophy. Review and assess a wide range of writing samples, including health sciences, argumentative essays, history, and student work that may address controversial subjects. Utilize the Socratic method of tutoring, prioritizing inquiry and higher-order concerns to foster critical thinking and writing skills. Participate in asynchronous and synchronous tutoring sessions, using our virtual classroom platform to engage with students remotely. Develop and maintain a deep understanding of Upswing's tutoring methodology and best practices. Collaborate with colleagues to ensure a seamless and supportive learning experience for students. Requirements and Details: Education: A degree in English, Writing, or a related field is required. A transcript demonstrating success in a writing-intensive program is highly preferred. Experience: 1+ year of college/university Writing Center tutoring (and training) experience is essential. Familiarity with tutoring methodology and experience working with students developing critical thinking skills are highly valued. Technical Requirements: Fast and reliable internet, access to MS Word/Google Docs, and a laptop/desktop computer are necessary for this role. Availability: A commitment of 25 hours per week during surge periods (approximately September 10 - December 10) is required. Compensation: Asynchronous tutoring pays $13 per hour, while synchronous tutoring pays $15 per hour. Tutor pay is disbursed biweekly via PayPal. Onboarding: Once hired, expect to onboard between 2-5 business days. Skills and Competencies: Excellent Writing and Communication Skills: Ability to provide clear, concise, and actionable feedback to students. Tutoring Methodology: Familiarity with the Socratic method and best practices in writing tutoring. Critical Thinking and Analysis: Ability to assess and evaluate student writing samples, identifying areas for improvement.
