The Tuberculosis (TB) Epidemiologist is an essential part of the TB team and develops, collects and analyses epidemiological data regarding TB in Nunavut. Reporting to the Manager Territorial TB Program, the role interprets this information to guide planning, priority setting and helps to monitor responses to frequent outbreaks across Nunavut’s 25 communities.

The Tuberculosis (TB) Epidemiologist Will Be Responsible For
• Developing a system for collecting and using qualitative and quantitative methods for TB Program planning including identifying potential methods, preparing a plan and a process, identifying the specific indicators and measurements, and identifying the ways various components of the health care system can contribute to establishing this system.
• Implementing a TB surveillance system in Nunavut and conducting field studies by selecting and applying the methodology for data collection, preparing for field collection during TB outbreaks.
• Assisting in planning the department’s responses to outbreaks of disease through monitoring emerging issues and trends in TB, working with the Manager TB Program and the Community Engagement Specialist, setting up a territory-wide surveillance system, and setting up a system with southern hospitals and health care services outside Nunavut.
• Compile, analyze, synthesize and prepare reports for decisions regarding selection of locations and types of interventions, preparation of reports concerning TB, preparation of day-to-day and other tracking reports, provision of progress reports, and determination of how to evaluate the progress and results.
• Building the capacity of the medical teams and providing expertise and guidance by supporting the professional development of Population Health professionals, preparing and collaborating in delivering in-services, assisting in health information, evaluation and research, and collaborating in the ongoing review, implementation and evaluation of data quality and surveillance data bases.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized
• Master’s degree in epidemiology, Biostatistics or Statistics along with an emphasis on quantitative methods.
• Two (2) years’ practical work experience.
• Proven practical skills in design, implementation, evaluation of quantitative and qualitative epidemiological research methods and experience with structuring and analyzing epidemiological information are essential for the position.
• Previous experience with communicable disease and TB in particular is considered as an asset along with experience with epidemiological data analysis and papers on health analysis and experience in writing technical reports and papers on health analysis.
• This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
