• Promote and facilitate the use of research and expertise by education and training providers, incumbent workers, employers, learners, and those who influence, make, and implement education and workforce policy and practice.

Position Specific Summary

The Program on Skills, Credentials and Workforce Policy (PSCWP) at the GW Institute of Public Policy (GWIPP) seeks two research assistants to support its Leveraging Technology to Link Skills and Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Skills Extraction and Research (LAISER) projects under the supervision of Dr. Kyle Albert, Dr. Divya Narula, and Senior Research Associate Micah Sanders. The student research assistants will be responsible for contributing to the development of an AI training dataset and Python library for the extraction of skills from education and employment related documents such as course syllabi and job descriptions. The research assistants will also assist with alpha and beta testing of a software program and API, and will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of concept papers and other non-peer-reviewed publications. Experience working with workforce and higher education data is preferred, as is experience working with major skills taxonomies (e.g., O*Net, Open Skills Network, Lightcast) and cloud-based AI large language model platforms such as Huggingface AI, Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud.

Students will gain real-world software application development experience. They will also gain experience working with skills taxonomies and AI large language models, and with developing concept papers geared towards a non-technical audience.

Standard Position Description

The student will perform administrative and research tasks with some discretion under direction of faculty member or research coordinator. Tasks may include: assisting with experiments, coding, data entry, data cleaning, and data analysis, preparing research and drafts for articles, reports, and/or presentations. Students may also complete literature reviews, draft summaries, and create graphs and figures. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental/faculty needs.

Preferred Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Proficiency in the Python coding language and experience working with large datasets.
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge and expertise of skills taxonomies and the literature on workforce development.
