Position: Sr. 5G RAN Software Architect (Remote with Travel) Sr. 5G RAN Software Architect (Remote with Travel) Join Fairwinds Technologies as a Sr. 5G RAN Software Architect to design, adapt, and integrate advanced 5G communication systems for military applications. Pay Range USD 150,000 – 200,000 per year. Location Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), MD – Remote with in‑office visits as needed. Position Overview We are seeking a Communications Software Architect with hands‑on 5G RAN and/or radio software development experience. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in ORAN gNB and radio software systems, and will focus on adapting the 5G Open Air Interface stack to support military Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) and Low Probability of Detection (LPD) objectives through DSSS and Frequency Hopping techniques. Key Responsibilities • Architect an end‑to‑end 5G communications system based on the Open Air Interface (OAI) open‑source stack. • Act as a 5G systems architect in a SBIR project, delivering software requirements documents and integration and test plans. • Adapt and extend the 5G Open Air Interface stack to optimize military LPI/LPD requirements by implementing DSSS and frequency hopping techniques. • Develop and validate system‑level approaches for integrating DSSS and frequency hopping into 5G‑based tactical communications. • Support integration and testing of communication systems in lab and field settings. • Interface with hardware and software teams to drive system‑level performance. • Author technical documentation, system specifications, and SBIR deliverables. Required Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field. • 5+ years of design experience in 5G RAN/Radio software development with deep knowledge of 5G and/or ORAN systems and 5G waveforms. • 5+ years of coding and reverse engineering with C/C++. • 3+ years of debugging real‑time communication software. • Experience writing systems and software requirement specifications. • Practical knowledge of DSSS and frequency hopping for secure, resilient wireless communications. • Experience with Terrestrial and Non‑Terrestrial (NTN) communication systems. • Understanding of 3 GPP specifications (Rel‑15 to Rel‑18). • U.S. citizenship and eligibility for DoD security clearance. Additional Preferred Qualifications • Master’s degree in Communications, Computer Science/Engineering, or Wireless Systems. • Experience with 5G core deployment using containerized or virtualized environments (Docker, Kubernetes). • Experience utilizing AI in code writing and reviews. • Hands‑on experience with the 5G Open Air Interface (OAI) stack, including gNB and UE integration. • Experience in L1 and L2 integration of 5G RAN or SATCOM communication systems. • Familiarity with adapting 5G/OAI for military applications, including LPI/LPD techniques. • Proficiency in MATLAB or similar simulation tools. • Experience with user equipment 5G software. • Experience supporting DoD SBIR projects or similar government‑funded R&D efforts. Supervisory Responsibility None. Work Environment This position is primarily performed in a traditional office environment. Some remote/hybrid work is also possible. Physical Demands Typical duties require standing, walking, sitting, use of hands for typing or writing, reaching, talking and hearing, and require close, distance, color, peripheral, depth vision and focus adjustment. Position Type/Expected Hours Full‑time, exempt. Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Travel Must be willing to travel 25–30% when required.
