About the position
The Fish and Wildlife Biologist 3 position within the Small Forest Landowner Office at the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) focuses on providing guidance and technical assistance to small forest landowners regarding the impact of forest management on fish and wildlife habitats. The role involves consulting on forest practices, assisting with applications, conducting habitat assessments, and delivering educational presentations. The position emphasizes collaboration with various stakeholders and requires a strong background in fisheries biology and environmental science.
Responsibilities
• Provide guidance to Small Forest Landowner Office staff and small forest landowners on forestland management effects on fish and wildlife.

• Consult and provide technical assistance for forest practice activities.

• Assist with water typing of streams and wetland delineation.
,
• Determine riparian management zone width and assist with harvest options.
,
• Participate in discussions regarding Forest Practices Applications with various personnel.
,
• Conduct permitted electro-fishing to determine fish presence and obtain necessary permits.
,
• Conduct habitat assessments and stream surveys, including fish barrier assessments.
,
• Deliver presentations and instruct classes on forest practice rules and related topics.
Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.

• Three years of professional experience in fish management, wildlife management, or habitat management.
,
• Experience in fisheries biology and electrofishing techniques.
,
• Experience in wetland plant and soils identification and wetland delineation.
,
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including teaching or public presentation experience.
,
• Knowledge of and ability to use GIS technologies for mapping and data collection.
,
• Current working knowledge of WA Forest Practices Rules and guidance.
Nice-to-haves
• Experience providing technical forestry assistance to small forest landowners.

• Working knowledge of Small Forest Landowner Office Capital programs.

• Experience in using ARC/INFO or ARG/GIS in Geographic Information Systems.
