Join us on our mission to reverse metabolic disease in one billion people.As a Senior Software Engineer on the Activation team, you’ll own some of the most critical and complex problems in Virta’s growth funnel—how we guide members from initial signup to their first meaningful health outcomes. This is a high-impact, high-leverage space where small improvements to conversion, speed, or engagement can unlock massive business and clinical outcomes. You’ll design and build systems that reduce friction in enrollment, and empower the next evolution in our scale.This role is uniquely interesting because it sits at the intersection of product, operations, and applied AI—combining experimentation, real-time decisioning, and LLM-powered development workflows to rapidly ship and iterate on experiences that directly impact our members’ lives.ResponsibilitiesOwn and deliver complex, ambiguous projects across the enrollment and early member journey, from problem definition through execution and iterationDesign and evolve scalable backend systems that power enrollment workflows, reduce time-to-enroll, and enable operational automationPartner closely with product, design, data, and operations to identify high-impact opportunities and translate them into technical solutionsBuild and maintain integrations with internal and external systems (e.g., clinical platforms, lab vendors, partner APIs), ensuring reliability, observability, and data consistency across boundariesLead technical decision-making for your team, balancing speed, quality, and long-term maintainabilityIdentify and address cross-team dependencies, technical risks, and scaling challenges before they become bottlenecksContribute to and elevate engineering standards, including code quality, system design, and developer experienceMentor engineers and act as a technical leader within the team, influencing beyond your immediate scopeLeverage modern AI-assisted and agentic coding workflows to accelerate delivery and improve engineering productivity90 Day PlanWithin your first 90 days at Virta, we expect you will do the following:Ship production features or improvements that measurably impact activation and scalability metricsBuild a deep understanding of the enrollment funnel, key friction points, and current system architectureTake ownership of a meaningful problem area and define a clear technical approach to improve itContribute to a high-impact initiative focused on improving system scalability, operational efficiency, or enrollment throughputIdentify and implement at least one improvement to engineering velocity, system reliability, or developer experienceEstablish strong cross-functional relationships and become a trusted technical partner to product and analyticsMust-Haves5+ years of experience building and shipping production systems, with strong backend fundamentals in Go and/or PythonProven ability to take ambiguous problems, define solutions, and drive execution with measurable impactExperience designing and operating scalable backend systems, including APIs, asynchronous/event-driven architectures, and distributed workflowsStrong product and business intuition—you understand how technical decisions impact user experience and company outcomesProficiency with modern AI-assisted development workflows and a mindset of leveraging them to move faster and build betterValues-driven cultureVirta’s company values drive our culture, so you’ll do well if:You put people first and take care of yourself, your peers, and our patients equallyYou have a strong sense of ownership and take initiative while empowering others to do the sameYou prioritize positive impact over busy workYou have no ego and understand that everyone has something to bring to the table regardless of experienceYou appreciate transparency and promote trust and empowerment through open access of informationYou are evidence-based and prioritize data and science over seniority or dogmaYou take risks and rapidly iterate Is this role not quite what you're looking for? Starting pay will be based on a number of factors and commensurate with qualifications & experience. For this role, the compensation range is 167,249 - 216,000.
