Job Title: Senior Manager of Design Location: Remote, United States FLSA Classification Exempt Job Description: Orbital Engineering, Inc. is seeking a Senior Manager of Design to support our Heavy Industrial Services division. This is a remote position that will interface with teams and resources across the United States and international locations. Responsibilities Include but Are Not Limited To: Responsible for the execution of all activities of the mechanical and piping design teams within central engineering. Schedule, organize, direct and review all design resources and activities. Coordinate with engineering and other discipline design resources for multi-discipline execution of design projects. Direct, develop, supervise, and provide technical guidance to the design team, ensuring alignment with engineering intent, project schedules, constructability requirements, and client standards Establish, implement, and continuously improve corporate design standards, drafting practices, CAD/BIM platforms, digital execution tools, and design execution procedures Ensure consistent quality, accuracy, and compliance of all design deliverables through formal design reviews and strict adherence to Orbital’s Quality Management System (QMS) Establish and execute departmental operational plans, including routines, tools, resources, and workflows, to support consistent operations, scalability, and growth of technical skill sets Identify resource and staffing needs; lead and/or participate in recruiting and interviews; onboard new team members; establish individual goals and expectations; and conduct performance reviews Identify training and career development opportunities and create development plans for department and individual contributors, including succession and career path planning Research, evaluate, and remain current on emerging and existing engineering design software, workflows, and industry best practices to improve efficiency, quality, cost competitiveness, and scalability Support project execution by contributing technically or managerially on high‑visibility or complex projects as required Supervise and review the preparation of engineering proposals, including scopes of work, design execution strategies, project schedules, and cost estimates Serve as a technical liaison to clients, providing enhanced customer support and supporting organizational business development initiatives as a technical resource Collaborate closely with other discipline managers, project managers, and business unit leaders to resolve resource conflicts, execution risks, and technical issues Promote Orbital’s safety culture through active safety engagement, compliance audits, employee training, and enforcement of safety requirements for both office and site activities Other Duties Please note that this job posting does not list all duties and responsibilities that are required of this job. Work Environment Fully Remote – United States Minimum Requirements Minimum 20 years of progressive experience in industrial design and drafting, including leadership of design teams Demonstrated experience supporting large, complex engineering projects in heavy industrial markets such as power generation, petrochemical, refining and steel Strong working knowledge of CAD and 3D design platforms (AutoCAD, Plant 3D, ACC, Revit, Navisworks) and design execution workflows Proven ability to lead geographically distributed teams and drive consistency across regions and business units Experience developing and enforcing corporate design standards and procedures Experience in developing resources and implementing work share with high value engineering centers Familiarity with project controls, resource planning, and utilization management Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills Must excel in working in a team environment Occasional domestic travel will be required Salary Range: $130,000 - $180,000 annually (based on experience, qualifications, and location) Benefits: A commitment to excellence and hard work will be rewarded with a competitive salary, career advancement opportunities, and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your health, financial security, and work-life balance.
