As a Senior Digital Editor, Travel, you will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive content strategy that showcases National Geographic's unique voice and perspective. You will work closely with our editorial team to create compelling, data-driven content that resonates with our audience and drives results. Your expertise in travel writing and editing, combined with your knowledge of search engine optimization and social media, will help us stay ahead of the curve in the ever-evolving digital landscape.
Job Summary:
The Senior Digital Editor, Travel, will contribute to and execute National Geographic's digital storytelling efforts, creating engaging, timely, and relevant content that meets our acquisition goals. You will spearhead content creation, from planning to publication, and collaborate with editors across the organization to ensure that our digital content is of the highest quality. Your responsibilities will include:
Pitching and suggesting story ideas that align with our KPIs and experimenting with new topic areas and formats
Building and maintaining a network of freelance writers with expertise in the travel space
Collaborating with our digital engagement team to advance our search strategy and craft compelling headlines
Working with our social team to develop digital content ideas and bigger projects
Coaching junior editors on the digital team and providing feedback on performance
Responsibilities:
Pitch and suggest framing for pitches at regularly scheduled pitch meetings
Identify stories that align with our KPIs and experiment with new topic areas and formats
Build and maintain a network of freelance writers with expertise in the travel space
Participate in regular digital editorial pitch meetings and execute on decisions made
Collaborate with our travel content partners to set expectations for publishing and organize coverage areas
Work with our digital engagement team to advance our search strategy and craft compelling headlines
Collaborate with our social team to develop digital content ideas and bigger projects
Meet weekly with our Senior Manager of Digital Editorial for feedback on performance
Coach junior editors on the digital team as necessary
Minimum Requirements:
Minimum of 5 years of editorial experience in digital publishing
Strong background in editing with a broad knowledge of search engine optimization and proven track record of writing irresistible headlines
Topical expertise and experience editing travel content across text and video platforms
Engaging on-camera video skills
Future-forward digital editing skills
Experience using data-driven tools
Ability to evolve story ideas out of brainstorms
Ability to write digitally-optimized headlines and text
Highly developed ability to recognize and create story ideas, including ideas with major visual and multimedia components
Preferred Experience:
Experience with travel writing and editing
Previous experience creating content for social media
Keen sense of the competitive media landscape, tried tactics, and industry trends
Understanding of priorities and demands of a large umbrella company
Proven patience working effectively within an ever-changing environment
Required Education:
Bachelor's Degree (concentration in journalism and digital media preferred)
