About the positionTheSenior Attorney / Assistant Attorney position within the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) involves a range of legal responsibilities related to environmental law and policy. The position is part of the NY HELPS program, allowing for non-competitive appointments, and offers opportunities for career advancement within the legal field.Responsibilities • Negotiate and implement enforcement matters including Orders of consent. • Represent the Department at permit and enforcement hearings. • Assist the Attorney General in litigation involving the Department. • Respond to Freedom of Information Law requests. • Communicate effectively with the regulated public, other agencies, co-workers, and court officers. Requirements • Graduate of an accredited law school with an LLB or JD degree. • Eligibility to take the New York State Bar examination.• Strong advocacy, research, and writing skills. • Excellent communication skills in person, writing, and on the telephone. Nice-to-haves • Experience in environmental law or related fields. • Familiarity with freshwater wetlands, fish and wildlife, and hazardous substances.
