Science Research Lead

Purpose: The Science Research Lead, (Retinal Degenerative Diseases) will lead scientific research analysis and strategy efforts for a portfolio of inherited retinal disease (IRD) genes on behalf of the Foundation, specifically focusing on IRD genes that are involved in photoreceptor ciliary biology (e.g., RPGR, CEP290, BBS1). This position will analyze and interpret scientific data to identify gaps, patterns, and insights, through literature review and collaboration with the research community. This position will bring together scientists, clinicians, affected individuals and their families to drive research towards preventions, treatments, and cures.

Primary Responsibilities: The following are representative of the duties and responsibilities associated with this position and are not meant to be an all-inclusive list:
• Develop and sustain comprehensive scientific expertise on portfolio genes, facilitating the production of landscape documents, gap analyses, peer-reviewed articles, and other strategic materials.
• Manage programatic ctivities related to portfolio genes (e.g., grant programs, workshops, scientific updates)
• Track and report on scientific progress and development efforts across portfolio genes, both internally and externally
• Serve as a source of trustworthy scientific information internally and externally for portfolio genes and the Foundation more generally.
• Work collaboratively across the organization to align programmatic and fundraising activities to address scientific gaps for portfolio genes
• Proactively establish positive, effective relationships internally and externally with relevant researchers, individuals, boards, volunteers, donors, external partners, and the community at large.

Essential Requirements:
• Must posess a PhD or MD/PhD in genetics, cell and molecular biology, or related field.
• Experience in basic and/or translational ophthalmology is preferred.
• Deep knowledge of genetic, cellular, and molecular mechanisms of homeostasis and disease.
• Demonstrated understanding of scientific methods and processes, including preclinical and clinical stages.
• Scientific curiosity.
• Strong analytic and critical thinking skills.
• Self-motivated, independent worker, with an ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
• Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
• Strong written science communication skills as evidenced by authorship on peer-reviewed scientific articles
• Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, reliable, and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously
• Must be proactive, enthusiastic, and have strong follow-up skills
• Fully proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
• Strong ethics and respect for confidentiality of donor information
• A deep commitment to the values of the organization and a passion for the mission

Position Specifics:
• Preferred Location: Columbia MD, Washington DC, Philadelphia, PA or New York City, NY: Relocation not provided.
• Work from home with travel to meetings and trainings as required.
• Reporting to Director, Science Research; no direct reports
• Starting salary: $100k-$112k annually. The range considers a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to: geographic markets, skill sets, experience, and internal equity to comparable roles.
• $120.00 monthly technology stipend.
• Annual Incentive Bonus Eligible: 5%.
• Full-time, flexible schedule
