[Remote] Head of Software Engineering - Director Title - REMOTE OK

Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Phaxis is a growing Insurance Underwriting firm seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead their technology initiatives. This hands-on leadership role involves overseeing the design, growth, and performance of AI-enabled underwriting software and managing a small, high-impact team.

Responsibilities
• Serve as a hands-on senior leader with a build mindset
• Work with AI-native platforms, automation, data, and modern technology stacks
• Apply software engineering and system design principles to underwriting processes and products
• Act as the hands-on owner for workflows, rules, integrations, configurations, data usage, and platform evolution
• Make build / configure / buy decisions
• Continuously identify, propose, and ship improvements that make underwriters faster and more effective
• Serve as the technical authority in discussions with underwriting, leadership, and vendors

Skills
• BS or MS in Computer Science, Software Engineering
• 5+ years of experience with TypeScript, SQL, Python (Django), Node.js, scaling APIs, and deep knowledge of REST and Kafka is a plus
• 3+ years leading software implementations with strong understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, APIs, data modeling, workflow engines or rules-based systems, testing strategies, and CI/CD pipelines
• Proven experience leading engineering teams or pods, including mentorship
• Familiarity with context and prompt engineering
• Demonstrated ability to make pragmatic technical decisions balancing speed, quality, and long-term maintainability
• Insurance experience is strongly preferred
