As a Staff Engineer, you will play a critical role in developing applications that leverage our vast repository of vehicle data to enhance autopilot capabilities, optimize hardware designs, and improve overall product quality.

About Tesla and the Fleet Analytics Team

Tesla's product and engineering subculture is deeply rooted in data-driven decision-making. Our Fleet Analytics team is a vital part of this ecosystem, enabling various teams across the company to harness the power of data to drive innovation. We collect data from every Tesla vehicle, Supercharger, and energy storage device to improve our products and ensure customer safety. As a Staff Engineer on our team, you will work closely with engineers and stakeholders to develop and maintain complex software systems that drive the usage of vehicle data at Tesla.

Key Responsibilities


Collaborate with stakeholders to design, develop, and maintain complex software systems that leverage vehicle data to drive business outcomes
Provide technical guidance to Tesla's data engineering and data science community on best practices and industry trends
Work closely with engineers to drive the adoption of applications and tools developed by the Fleet Analytics team
Conduct reproducible data analysis on petabytes of data using modern open-source technologies such as Apache Spark, Pandas, and Jupyter notebooks
Communicate complex data insights and assumptions to stakeholders through clear and concise summaries and visualizations
Design and implement data pipelines to optimize the performance and accuracy of analysis work across the company
Develop metrics, applications, and tools that enable engineers to self-serve their data insights and drive business decisions
Write clean, tested, and maintainable code that can be extended by other software engineers


Essential Qualifications


7+ years of software development experience in a related field, with a strong background in data engineering, data science, or a related discipline
Proficiency in Python and SQL, with experience working with large datasets and data processing engines like Apache Spark
Experience with data science tools such as Pandas, NumPy, R, Matlab, or Octave, and data visualization libraries like Bokeh or Matplotlib
Strong foundation in statistics and data analysis, with experience applying statistical techniques to drive business decisions
Experience building data pipelines, web applications, and machine learning models in a professional setting
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Strong problem-solving skills, with a bias for action and a willingness to refine problem statements and identify solutions using available data and first principles


Nice to Have Qualifications


Strong proficiency in Scala, with experience working with distributed computing frameworks like Spark and Presto
Experience with DevOps tools like Linux, Ansible, Docker, and Kubernetes, and a understanding of continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines
Familiarity with complex hardware systems, including experience working with firmware or hardware engineering teams
Experience with non-traditional data sources, such as vehicle data or IoT devices
